Unfortunately it’s a reflection on our
“gimme” society where too many feel that others, be it a business or HMG, have to provide the fruits from the money tree.
 
Seems the ultimate in stupidity. The idea of free electricity was never something that would last forever and the charges proposed are so low it should still be a good deal compared with other commercial providers. The idea that Tesco would pay for his fuel forever was never on and he should be pleased with the free power he has had rather than carp on about it ending.
The local authority has just ended the same thing, but my neighbour with his Zoe knew full well it could not go on indefinitely and was prepared for it. He is grateful for what he did get.
If Tesco agree to give the rest of us free petrol and diesel I would be happy to take it until that deal expired.
 
As a Tesco user and tax payer and rates payer. I have never been content that I am subsidising others mileage costs. Even though I accept that new technology and innovation often needs a helping hand.

I have never understood what was in it for Tesco or VW.

What was in it for VW was a PR message to counter diesel-gate. For Tesco, it was the the alternative to the 5p off per litre of fuel for EV drivers, and attracted users to the store. Certainly given the choice between a Tesco with free charging and a Sainsbury's without, I would pick the Tesco and do my shop there. It made sense for Tesco when electricity was about 12p/kWh ex VAT. Now its more like 50p for a business, its a lot less sensible.
However, it was never going to last for ever, certainly not since the cost of energy shot up. And it was that increase that sealed the deal as a double whammy. 1) It cost Tesco/VW more and 2) many drivers would head to Tesco, park up and leave for a full charge - especially if the store was one where the parking restrictions were not well enforced.

For me, it was a nice occasional perk, but realistically makes no real difference. As it stands, they set the price at a very reasonable 28p/kWh. Thats very competitive and if you don't have a home charger or cheap over night tariff would still be worth doing a long shop at Tesco for.
 
I tend to buy my diesel at Tesco using their Tesco bank CC. That gives me extra points which in turn becomes cash coupons. The free charge points were a good “green” PR exercise. Image and all that. I now see a lots of notices, “Aldi price match“. Free advertising by Tesco for Aldi🤪🤪. There will be another marketing ploy, more BOGOFs.
 
Why do they need to charge the cars up at Tesco? do they all live a few hundred miles away and need to charge to be able to get home? I dont think so, could it be that its FREE? perhaps I will have to think about that!
 
I shop at Tesco no fuel pumps or EV charging here yet, it's been here for a lot of years and not a small one either.

When I drove a PHEV, supermarket charging was very helpful. Given the limited electric only range of a PHEV (about 20 to 25 miles), if I could charge at my shopping destination that was between 10 and 15 miles away from home, it meant I could do the whole journey on electricity, both saving money and reducing emissions for the journey. Given a choice of stores that were more or less near each other, I would pick the one with chargers (free chargers being even more of a bonus).

Since having the full BEV, it has become far less important. If heading to the supermarket from home, there is no need to charge, so the free topup was a simple perk. It would be the same incentive as to use a store that had a 5p off per litre when spending £50. Indeed, the "value" gained was probably about the same. I used to save my 5p a litre to try and fill my car, saving on perhaps 60 litres of fuel - £3. Before the energy crisis, electricity was about 15p/kWh. At 7kW, 30 mins of shopping might get you 3.5kWh - about 50p worth, 10 miles or so. Today that same 30 mins is worth about £1.20 at the rate Tesco have set, or about £2.40 at market rate.
 
Our local Tesco is quite small but has four electric points which do seem to get a fair amount of use. Looking at the quoted rate I do think they may be cheaper than many home chargers if owners have not changed to a specialist tariff.

That was the flaw in the program. To charge, you just had to plugin and claim the charge using the podpoint app. I believe the HW install was funded by VW, the power and space by Tesco, and the charging solution run by PodPoint. I would love to see a) Clubcard points awarded for buying electricity from Tesco (just as you do for fuel bought from Tesco) and either a discount or free charging credits awarded to be used on Tesco chargers.

Disappointingly, moving from "free" to "paid" with no rewards scheme will likely not help Tesco or EV drivers at all. Tesco lose their incentive model to attract EV drivers and EV drivers wont bother using a resource that is too expensive to bother with.
 
Goodness me! All sounds vey complicated- I’ll stick to my beloved diesel car all the while I tow and live in the back of beyond. I would suffer from “range anxiety” with an EV, couldn’t cope with that and supermarket shopping. I’d rather have money off at the till But do have fond memories of Green Shield stamps - suppose it’s called progress.

Very much so. Back in the 70’s. My friend got a job as a sign writer for Tesco’s. Everything was red on white and usually involved the word SALE.

He had a workshop over the Tesco in Crosby. A small Tesco by today's standards. One year his workshop was used for a boosey party. We left the party via the shop and through the tills where the drunk manager issued everyone with copious amounts of GS stamps as they left.

We were told he had a big job in balancing the books later.

In 1969 I pumped petrol at a service station offering quadruple GS stamps. We alays gave the customer double. Most never queried it. Each night we divied up filling a book a week. 🙀🙀Mum was very happy
