We are looking to buy a motorhome early next year but we are trying to decide the best options considering our own predicament.
We live in France and ideally it would be better to have a LHD van whilst travelling through some of Europe. We may only stay here a few more years and return to UK after that and so a RHD (from UK) would come in handy for when we return and is therefore an option.
The problems are that most of the used vans here are fixed-bed (and I consider this a waste of space) and short on cooking facilities . Another major factor being the vans here are more expensive although the exchange-rate is helping in more recent months. We are also looking at the annual general costs and this may help us decide on the LHD/RHD options.
If we buy in UK we have to pay Annual Road Tax (none in France) and have an Annual MOT (every two years in France on cars but not sure about campervans).and I presume annual certification for gas, electric etc? Insurances are probably similar but there may be a restriction on how long a UK insured van can be on the continent annually; again I'm not sure.
If we have to take the UK van back to UK each year there are ferry costs as well as the UK tax, MOT etc and therefore this makes it more expensive than the French equivalent.
What I would like members to help me with is:
1 How much is the road tax?
2 How much is the MOT and Gas/Elec certification?
3 Are there any other annual costs/considerations other than normal running, repair and service costs?
We would be looking for a 4 berth van, for the additional space, but threre are only 2 of us (and the dog of course).
Your help and advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you and regards
