Got back from devon today, We covered 626 miles in total most of which where towing the van (around 100 miles solo)going down we hit a lot of traffic and the journey took 6 1/2 hours which was an hour and a half longer than it should have took and the return trip was even worse taking nearly 8 hours, the average mpg figure is 36.5 mpg which is allmost what i expected.

The s max has proved itself to be an excellent tow car on this trip and i can highly recomend it, which is more than i can say for east devon which was horrible.

how did you manage that.... posted 23 Jul 2008 09:18 PM by colin

Colin, I just drive my car. I use the onboard computer to guage the mpg, is it accurate?? how the hell do I know I havent had it calibrated, And I ant got time or the inclination to check top up to top up and work it out.

I was asked a question and answered it to the best of my knowledge, if you dont beleive it, fine I wont be loosing any sleep over it.

As fo my mpg I did drive down the m5 from Highbridge Febuary last year with a strong head wind and got 22 mpg. Does that satisfy your doubting

as stated average fuel solo is between 45 and 55 and towing around 28

Anthony there is something far wrong with your mondeo by far i used to get 26/28 (same as yours) towing a Swift charisma 1460KG and 45/48 solo so would have a look at your fuel pump changed it for a 2.2 diesel Nissan xtrail and get 25/27 towing same van plus 46/49 solo

Cheers

I have a Volvo V50 SE 2 litre diesel and tow a Lunar Clubman 470/2. I get about 30 mpg when towing and about 42 mpg when solo. I have been disappointed with the fuel economy from this, my first diesel. Always managed to do better than the manufacturer quoted combined mileage on my previous cars (3 Mondeos in succession) but have been well below with this one (by about 6/7 mpg). The car tows well except when the engine is cold - when possible I like to take it out for a short warm-up before hitching up.

Colin said,

I tow a bailey ranger 380/2 with a renault megane 1.9dti

fuel consumption solo 400miles per tank full (40 ltrs) towing about 300 miles, "you do the maths I can't be arsed"

Okay, since the numbers are easy I'll do it for you.

solo works out as 400miles/40ltrs = 10 miles per litre x 4.5 litres to a gallon (one decimal place)= 45mpg.

towing is 300miles divided by 400miles (solo) is 75% = 27mpg.

Now get the beers in!

I tend to agree with some of the cynics, my trip computer is bad enough, too scary to work it out properly, but what can I do, not tow? No way!

But I have an interesting observation. Going to Le Mans for two years now, I got better mpg (average trip computer only) going from Surrey to Dover than anywhere in France. You might say different wind conditions etc, but it happened both going and returning AND both this year and last. Explain that!

I've got a VW Touran 1.9TDi (the 105bhp one) towing a Coachman Amara 530/4 (1500kgs). Solo anywhere between 40 and 50mpg, towing anywhere between 23 and 28mpg. Now my previous car, a VW Sharan 1.9TDI 110 bhp would do roughly the same whether solo or towing but we had an Elddis Wisp 6 berth (1000kgs). So if you get more than 30mpg towing, well done but I am very sceptical about high 30's and low 40's if you're towing. Sorry but I don't see how you can do it. Unless you calculate actual mpg figures and not rely on trip computers. My Passat 1.8 computer tells me it does on average, 31mpg, but when I calculate it using how much I put in against the miles then it always comes out at less than 28mpg.

So if you're getting 30mpg + towing, well done!
