mandy

go to whattowcar.com

type 1500kg (the mtplm of the indiana) into the what tow car search box half way down on the left of the page.

refine your search and it will give you a very good idea as to what you are looking for.

a good tip is to leave the weight ratio percentage at 85%, the reason for this can be found by searching the forum if you are not aware why. its a safety thing !!!

hope this helps

Hello Mandy

Please be aware that Whatcar.com and all the other third party advice sites can give erroneous information. Do not simply rely on their answers to be gospel, always check your car and caravan specifications for weights etc with their data plate, relevant handbook or directly with the manufacture.

The principal behind keeping the trailer as light as possible compared to the tow vehicle is sensible, but despite Mat's suggestion I have been unable to find any definitive answer to who suggested 85% for caravans, or the technical reasoning behind choosing that particular figure. There is a strong suggestion that it was derived in the 1950 or 1960's and has not been revised despite the fact that cars have become more powerful with better brakes. It has passed into towing UK folk lore.

For that reason alone 85% is not a ridged figure and it has absolutely no basis in law.

Legally, you must observe any limits set out in the vehicles specifications. Towing limits are now set for individual models by the manufactureres, and in some cases the specification may be less than 85%.

Hi Mandy

I have a Sterling Eccles jewel MTPL 1500 which is the same as the indiana and I tow with a 2.2 Mondeo. I have had it for two and a half years its had no problems so far.

These are popular cars so there should be quite a few about

Hope this helps

I tow our Indiana with a 2005 X-Trail 2.2 DCi. It tows great. I would add that the kerb weight was stated as 1520kg but I took it to a public weighbridge and it was 1720kg (3/4 tank of fuel with me sat in the drivers seat & no luggage).

If I change the car I will certainly weigh it again, surely this is the most accurate way.

As for economy the book says 39mpg solo but it's 4 years old now. Towing I'm not really sure and to be honest I bought the car to tow the van so I have to fill it up when required, needs must as they say.

regards

Mike

i make mention of the 85% GUIDE as a safety issue only, there is no definitive answer, other than stated by max weights.

the pointing of mandy in the direction of the whattowcar website was mearly to assist her in making a more informed decision as to what possible vehicles could answer her question, in ways making a shortlist.

i am not in anyway saying she MUST stay at 85% nor the data on the site is correct.

I tow a senator oklahoma (same weight as the indiana, just that the bed is on the other side) with 2007 Toyota Landcruiser diesel auto.

About 30mpg solo, and around 24mpg towing.

Quite liked the idea of the Honda CR-V, but it wasn't available as an auto at the time (there's a rumour it may be announced with the new diesel engine and auto at the Frunkfurt motor show next month). The other diesel autos which made the short list were VW Tourag and Kia Sorento. Wasn't convinced on the VW's reliability (but a great drive) and found the Kia the least comfortable of the three.

We tow ours with a Volvo V70 2.4 diesel auto (163 bhp).

It is something like a 91% match but is very stable and pulls the van and four us very easily. The best tow car I've owned!

It does 30 - 31 mpg towing

Passat Estate 170 PS DSG Diesel.

Fuel consumption varies from 26.5 (heavy right foot travelling down France to St Raphael on empty autoroutes and Ascension day) to 30 @ lorry speed with a number of 50mph motorway limits.

Only mods to van was "shock absorbers" after last years trip through the Massif Central - MUCH improved stability. Solo consumption 45-55 - foot dependent!!

NB Real Kerbweight (weighbridge) 1760 kg - including myself almost full fuel tank and the general odds and sods in the car

We tow a Pageant S7 Bretagne with a Zafira 150 CDTi

While not quite an Indiana, it s 7'6" wide and 1482 MPTLM.

I can easily get 45mpg solo and I get about 25mpg towing and that is with 3 bikes on the roof too. However if it is very windy, the mpg can drop to 20 - 21

I think so we were there the last couple of days July (we arrived on the Wednesday) - if it was you, you were in on the first pitch on the right about 2/3 up the main road. We were up on Northfield, top of the main road and on the left...

Will do!!!

We need to start a Bretagne S7 appreciation club and show all the 'teak wood' doubters that we have brilliant caravans.

Just up from you (above the playpark & toilet block) in the field on the left there was a S7 Loire I think it was.

Mandy,

I used to tow my Indiana with an Audi A4 Avant 2.0ltr TDi Auto 140bhp (company car)MPG Low 40's solo 19mpg towing & a 93% match but since redundancy I bought a Kia Sorento XS 2.5ltr diesel manual, now I know why everybody raved about them, tows the van as if it wasn't there! downside, fuel economy solo 38ish but consistanly 24ish towing 70% match
