what car?

We looked at a Swift Charisma 535 today and I really liked it. Only problem is that it is too heavy for our car which is a Peugeot 406 2.00TD (110). Can't decide whether to keep or van for a while longer or change car. What car would be suitable to tow the Swift? Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Hi,

if it's any help we tow with an old Audi 100 2.5 tdi it weigh's 1500kg and tow's our swift fairway 520 mtplm 1420kg.

We also have a VW Sharan 1.9tdi this tow's no problem at all and weigh's the same as the Audi, the newer Audi is the A6 and has better touque.

According to a quick bit of research a new Swift charisma 535 has a maximum permissible weight of 1287kg. If you want to keep to 85% of the towcar weight you need a vehicle of around 1500kg. Try looking on the what car web site - they give weights and max towing weights for almost any car around. Choosing a car is a personal thing so I suggest reading the reviews on the what car site it will give you a good idea of reliability and any problems with specific cars. Your own car would be great if it was slightly heavier.

don't understand why you vant to change your car,this car is a good towing car,one of the best saloon cars for towing.

yes its around 91% which isn't that bad.trying to stick rigidly to the 85% rule can't be done all the time,caravans are to heavy now.but i do think you'vegot a good tow car and the match is ok

Bernadette - we tow our 1300kg (MIRO) van with our 3.0 litre 406 Estate - no problems at all, steady as a rock. OK the Estate is a touch heavier than the the saloon at 1500kg kerbweght, but as others have said you should be allright. The only criticism I have of my car is the horrendous mpg when towing, but your diesel should be better.

I tow a Swift Charisma 565 with my 406 2.0 Hdi saloon - it is a 90% plus match but as stable as any outfit I've had before and providing you have the 110 bhp engine (not the 90 bhp) the car pulls like a train.

If you are reasonably experienced I wouldn't dismiss the car as incapable of towing your new van until you have tried it.

The 85% rule is a guideline not a hard and fast rule and you do not necessarily need to load your van to the maximum permissable weight so there is the means to get close to 85%.

Thanks everyone for your help. I asked for advice as the salesman yesterday used a software programme to check the match on the van and our car. One area came up as red and the salesman said it would be illegal to tow with it. Perhaps he was on commission for selling the Bailey 460/ 4 as he told us that would be perfect!

I really don't know why it should be illegal to tow with your 406 if the max. weight of the Swift Charisma 535 is 1287kg, as Cliff says. The maximum permissible towload of the car is 1500kg and that's ample to be legal. There doesn't appear to be any other restriction such as on max. gross train weight which should bother you, either.

the car youv'e got is fine,some salesmen these days are beyond a joke.its gone red on the graph when its gone over the RECOMMENDED 85%,HAVE A GREAT TIME TOWING AND DON'T WORRY AT ALL
