im sure this subject has been posted before but i thought after seeing a post from a newbie we could reasure them that we all have done someting daft the first time we used a van

the first van we had was a 1979 eldiss cyclone and never before owning a van didnt have a clue as im a hgv driver i had no trouble with the loading and towing so that part was easy but like the subject says what did we forget

well for a start we forgot teaspoons....now that dont sound bad untill you want a cup of tea!so we had to jump in the car and go and find some spoons.when we did and had our tea we came to wash the pots......ahh we forgot to get a waste water container so when the wife had done the washing up i had to kneel down at the back of the van holding an old bowl catching the waste water and when it was full shouting to the wife to put the plug back in while i went to the waste water point to empty it,come back and fill it again.sounds like a disaster but it was our fist time and we had such a laugh and good time and have enjoyed many years of caravaning since

Not so much as what we forgot, but we picked up our van from the dealer and off we went. On site went to fill up the toilet flush tank, and thought wow this should last me all season as the 3rd bucket of water went in. Then there was an almighty shout from the missus. I was also filling the whole washroom!!!! The dealer had forgot to put the tank bung in, and I didn't know to look. Oh well that's caravanning. I won't do that again :)

I think we had EVERYTHING and more bar the kitchen sink, my wife had gone through some caravanners list of what you need and must have just "in case" and we probably even had that tool for extracting boy scouts from horses hooves! I'm sure we did not need an emergency flare gun and jungle survival kit ;-)

What we didn't have was much space left, we soon thinned out what we carried and realised that there were shops and supermarkets along our routes and near most destinations and that sites had washing machines.

Our Caravan has its own supplies so everything is left in it. That way nothing gets left behind.

i dont know about the first time we ever went, but 3 months ago with our brand new caravan, we forgot knives and forks, dinner plates, matches, tin opener, corkscrew, dvd, we only had one spoon which was put in with the coffee, so that was lucky. but all that didnt matter, as all the caravan electrics refused to work, so it was a disaster anyway. so later today i will be double checking whats in now, as we go away on friday. oh and we once forgot the awning, and the chairs. On our first trip out we decided to take the portable tv. (wont be going with us on every trip) but the other half wanted to check the connection/aerial etc was working. HE (tried blaming me though) forgot the remote control, and apparently its one of those that needs the remote control to set up??? So the tv spent the weekend in the boot of the car. Didnt forget it the next time though as I did ALL the packing while he was at work. But it took the whole 2 hour journey for him to remember and say, please tell me you packed the tv remote control this time. The look on his face when I said, of course i did, was better than when he opened his presents on christmas morning grrrrrrr

I'm like your wife, Euro. Everyone laughs at my computer-printed lists but I never forget anything (I've tried to forget Rob a few times when he's promised to be home from work early to set off on a caravan holiday but somehow something that just can't wait always seems to crop up!)

in august last year me and the other half picked up are new caravan from the dealers and put it into storage for the night as we were going away the next day i spent the night putting the things in it from the boot of the car taken out of our old van.

we went away the next day only to find when we got onto sight i forgot to load the pots, pans, spoon, water containers, and the new battery, for the van so we had to dash off to the local caravan dealer and get the bits and to tesco to get the rest.

we had left the other bits on the old van as i thought she had taken then out and she thought i had.

Hi

The first time out with our first caravan was fine. Traded in the caravan for another, picked the van from the dealers, towed it to a near site for the weekend, we found out we had left our daughter's sleeping bag at home. Returned to the dealers, daughter ended up with a new Barbie sleeping bag, her favourite character at the time.

Greetings,

We once put up the awning with not a hitch or swear word first time in the season , until we had to put the pegs in and 'discovered' that they were in the garage at home.

A quick purchase of rock pegs from the shop cured that one.

Or there was the time we stopped at a Relais Routier in France on a Sunday ( empty lorry park)for lunch.

At the end of the break we exited the van, locked the door and drove off leaving the step in all its glory alone in the middle of the car park. I often wondered what the proprieter of the cafe thought the following morning with the step left there.!!!

Went to swap the gas cylinders to cook for evening dinner. Found I'd left the gas spanner at home.It now stays in a caravan drawer.

Cheers

Not sure it was the first time..but we once forgot the Bedding..quilt etc. spent our first night under 2 Blankets that we kept in the Car....good job it wasn 't winter.

We have also taken the wrong poles with an awning etc. so couldn't put it up..that was good. Once went over 70 miles home a round trip to get the right ones..that was a long day.!!!

Also once did a lovely meal pf chicken salad..and a pudding..left in the house fridge..yes you guessed..forget it. Came home 4 weeks later...looked at it...yukkkk...actually it didn't look that bad...but no..we did throw it away.!!!!

Chrisann.
