We used to camp out in the bush in Africa near the Mbembesi River in Matabeleland
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mbembesi_River&action=edit&redlink=1 and our caravan had gas mantles and a gas fridge. The icebox was that small you could not even get a roast in it and you really needed a fridge in temperatures of 40C. No facilities for miles around. To get water we had to dig into the river bed and wait for the water to accumulate.
Toilet was an antbear hole and you hoped it was not occupied. My friend discovered this when an antbear shot out of the hole, hitting him in the backside. Talk about crapping oneself. On another occasion we had a stand off between a leopard and us over the watering hole we had dug. The leopard won!
One night while sleeping in the awning I got woken up by a pussy cat sniffing my face. I chased it out and went back to sleep. The next morning on waking up I realsied it had been a leopard sniffing my face!
Every day we would plod out into the wilderness for miles in the hot sun starting off at about 5am and then at 9am we would rest up until about 4pm due to the heat. No air con in those days! Saw loads of game and other wildlife. We were always very careful of the
Wag 'n bietjie (Wait awhile) Buffalo thorn tree as you could be stuck in it for hours. Our towing vehicle was a Peugeot 404 pickup! We had many adventures and you learnt to survive. Unfortunately space is too limited to recount many of them.
BTW no chance of damp in a caravan in that climate!
