I have a new TV and generator, also a 12volt leisure battery in my caravan. What piece of equipement do I need to use with my TV in order to watch my TV when I am parked in a field? I will have a fully primed 12 volt leisure battery charged up by the generater. Do I need a stabiliser or inverter, and do I watch my TV with the generator working? Any information much appreciated, I find that caravans, batteries and generators are most difficult areas to understand.
Many thanks for any positive advice, Pauline

A lot depends on what generator you have.
If it is a cheap 2 stroke generator then do not use it except to charge the battery away from the van.
They are known to be very unreliable as far as voltage output is concerned and can spike up to 320v, which will destroy all your delicate electronic items.
When you say parked in a field,,what do you mean exactly?
If on a CL or any site, the use of generators is usually strictly limited.

It is very expensive to run a generator for extended periods of time, and they need regular maintainence.

hi Pauline.
right where to start it depends on,,,
type of tv you have.
type of jenny you have.
type of tv you want to watch.

first the tv is it dual voltage ie 240/12v with or without built in freeview or just 240v or 12v.
if it is 240v only it is not really suitable for use in the van unless using a EHU. a inverter can be used but they drain the battery very quickly.
second a generator is not a good idea either because they have unregulated supply as damian said and are very noisy I have one for using power tools when there is no mains supply but would not dream of plugging a tv into one.
and lastly what tv do you want to watch cable is out for obvious reasons freeview from an ariel or satelite tv. freeview if built in only requires an ariel if not a digital decoder or didgybox will be needed plus the same ariel.
satelite tv can be watched via sky "skybox from home" or by freesat via a decoder and mobile sat dish.
tv can also be watched on the computer off the internet if you have a dongle and can get a signal.
with out knowing what equipment you have or what you exactly want to do with it that is the best I can advise.
colin.
