Acouple of months ago I took out a new subscription with a magazine, the first D/D was taken from my account in March however the first issue to arrive was the 'June'issue. Now despite a number of phone calls the 'free gift' of a hand held vacuum cleaner has still not arrived it is always coming in the next few days. What would you do?

If you took out the subscription as a result of the "free" offer of the vacuum cleaner and it has not arrived then the publishers have broken their contract under the sale of goods act and thereby can be prosecuted. Contact them quoting that they have not completed their contract and that if you do not receive the cleaner within 14 working days you will have no alternative than to instruct your solicitor to make a claim in the small claims court and any legal expence incurred by you may be added to their costs. Also you will have no alternative but to cancel your D/D. Mark your letter cc. to your solicitor for information, even if you do not forward it to them straight away. Send the letter by recorded delivery so there will be proof of them receiving it.

I assume from your reply that the magazine in question is a popular caravan magazine with a very popular internet forum site. Am I right sir?

me, I would write to the editor and explain you have a problem and would like it looked into. The company who do the subscriptions are not the magazine direct and a nudge from the editor may be all it needs

But then again, I would name practical caravan as being the mag as I doubt very much that their legal dept will issue anything against themselves.

Steve.I heat what you say that they sub-contract, but at the end of the day I took a contract with the magazine in question not the contractor and it was the magazine that has the benefit of my money so it is they I expect to remedy the situation, personally I feel trading standards are the best route to take do you agree!

Hi.

I am still waiting for my free flights to the USA with Hoover from about 20 years ago. Do you think they will come now?

Morning

I realise this is annoying, but if it is the same hand held jobbie I received after subscribing to a magazine I wouldn't worry. Mine went in the bin ages ago. Suction was next to useless.

We did exactly the same. Subscribed to a well known magazine offering practical advice in caravanning with a promise of a hand held vac. No hand held vac yet. A phone call in late april, resulted in assurances that we were "on the system" and it would appear in the next couple of weeks. Nothing as yet. If you get two, one of them is ours!

Hi All

As a newsagent who delivers and shopsaves any magazine under the sun I love to hear of subscription problems like these. Remember, the first copy you bought was most likely from a newsagent and inside was an offer so tempting ( but nothing like what your newsagent could hope to match )stealing your business from its original source. Like CLs if you don't use us you'll loose us. How will magazines get launched then?

Of course there is the other side - how long will magazines survive in their present form anyway?

I used to regularly buy computer mags for info and the ads. Haven't bought one for about 2 years, as everything is available online easier and quicker.

If you payed by DD, you can speak to your bank, tell them that the goods have not been deliverd as per contract, and instruct them to stop future payments and recover past ones. This is in accordance with the rules of the DD scheme.

Greetings Plotter,

You're not on your own you know.

Way back in March (it must have been the rising sap) a Popular Outdoor Lifestyle Magazine with a name not dissimilar to a members magazine giving details of its members rallies. (I can see the cogs working!!!) 'lifted' an entry I made in their forum. They published it in their magazine and gave it 'Star Letter' status.

They promised me the earth, well four books to help me see bits of it better (4 touring guides) and do you know what?

I'm still waiting for the guides despite two emails and a letter to the Editor.

Cheeky b**ger me, I sent a copy to the same magazine you're having problems with, hoping to get something out of them.

Being ever so tight fisted (but you knew that already)that ever so Practical magazine published the letter but I got nowt, other than an acknowledgement from a fellow camper at Loches, in the Loire who said he'd never been in the company of a published author.

Anyway, enough of this drivel. Good luck in your quest for the vacuum.

You should take them to the cleaners! Sorry, couldn't resist it.:);)

Greetings The Plotter,

Your'e not on your own you know.

Way back in March (It must have been the rising sap) another well known publication with a name not dissimilar to a members magazines supplement giving rally details, 'lifted' an entry I had put on their forum. (Tesco vouchers for P&O ferries)and gave it Star Letter staus and promised me the world. Well four touring guides anyway. I'm still waiting for those guides despite two emails and a letter.

Cheeky b**ger me, I submitted the same letter to another well known magazine but they gave me 'Practically' nowt. Oh they published my letter, but the only thing I got out of it was an acknowledgement from a fellow camper in Loches,Loire who said he'd never been in the company of a published author before.

So I say keep at them until you get your vacuum and if they don't produce the goods, TAKE THEM TO THE CLEANERS. Sorry, couldn't resist it. :):):)
