Fire Service. Really enjoy it, particularly now some of the sexist dinosaurs are retiring and standards are rising in line with that.

Lisa.

The clock keeps mooving on so it be your turn before you know it.You wait and see then who will be the old one who hold the new team back.

In my post above, I was refering to descrimination which raised its ugly head in the post made by a retired FF. We should all work together to outlaw discrimination in the workplace.

Fire Service. What you do, not who you work for was the heading.

ps my mate was the first SO on the scene at Flixborough. He retired as an ADO not in the least sexist.

My best mate a retired ADO first on the scene at Flixborough is not/ was not sexist, but he don't think women should be front line firefighters. It's a case of strength not brains, so please don't get uptight when someone makes a comment you don't like. Women should start at Station Officer level after gaining a relevant degree, and carrying out a period of front line training, without having to fight a fire. You don't need to get burnt to know fires are hot.

I read some time ago most incidents could be handled by two men in a van, or two women in a van.

Lisa, Thank god for The Sex Discrimination Act (SDA) 1975

(prickly comment removed by a mod).

Think about it, the RN provided cover for the Fire Brigade the last time it went on strike. The service was provided by Men & Women of the RN who perform at sea on an equal basis. but in the Firefighting context the Men tend to take the Lead, because portable pumps can't be handled by women, they are to Heavy. In my comments I never said women should not be in the service only that the task should be relevant to the strength.

Ok Frank, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. It's probably best I don't engage in any more posts on this subject now for various reasons.

Diane,

I don't think I have given any reason to think I am sexist, OK "Women should be bare foot and pregnant and tied to the kitchen sink" Now that is a sexist remark.

And again mines a pint, no matter who is paying !!!!!!!!!

And why did you not answer my request for info on CLs in Carmarthen posted on UK ??

Val & Frank

Vals Grandmother had 17 children and died aged 35 they lived in the valleys. Now her grandfather was sexist, but certainly not me.

Sexism or otherwise - fair enough there should in normal life (working or not) be no form of sexual differentiation regarding the role of either a man or woman in society. However there are certain jobs which are more suited to either a man or a woman.

I have worked in the professional side of construction all my working life. I worked with a femal architect who had a brilliant flare for design, especially interior design. I have also taught young ladies architecture and surveying modules at Btec and HNC level. I have also experienced women in the craft side of the industry and there is a marked difference in performance between the male and female worker. A woman would struggle to carry a full hod of bricks, a bag of cement or a bucket of fresh mortar.

Likewise the female caring nature is far better suited to work such as nursing, infant school teaching and similar jobs where compassion is required. Men are not generally built for this.

It is therefore what is required of the individual whilst in work that must be considered, there are though exceptions to the rule. Each person should be judged on their individual merits and suitability for the particular task and not stereotyped into catergories of suitability.
