Wheel trims for steel wheels

I have a '98 van with 13 inch steel wheel rims, I have tried fitting plastic trims (a pair bought from a dealer and a pair from a Nissan Micra) but both types were so tight that the dealer ones actually cracked. I realise that they need to be tight to stay on but I couldn't get these on in the first place!

Any ideas??
 
I bought a cheap set at Boyes. This means there are two spares ready for when any get lost. Or not if you have a twin axle 'van.
 
I find that i only use one because there is a wheel clamp on the other at all times except when mobile. It is hardly worth fitting it for that couple of hours especially when i am the only person who can't see how pretty it looks.
