Deli Dave, you are absolutely correct in your posting.

Even if a gas union has not been undone, any movement of the pipe could result in a leak , more than likely further away from the appliance at the next union, or a split pipe.

That is why a gas test is essential, pressure or drop, it is the same thing in essence.

As for flexible hose, as Gary has pointed out, it would be impossible to check without pulling appliances out.

However, I was asked to check a trailer tent which the guy has refurbished and he thought I was being awkward when I issued a prohibit notice on it as he had used reinforced water pipe for the gas supply to the hob and oven.

Hello Jeff,

Please let me first of all assure you that I am not getting at you. But I have to agree with other posters here that your suggestion on how to change the element of your fridge demonstrates a lack of understanding of the law and what should be considered good practice when it comes to gas connections.

If you look through countless other threads on gas related matters you will see that I champion safe working practices - with good reason, I used to be a gas a LPG fitter and later provided H&S reports on installations and appliances where incidents had occurred thus I am in a position to recognise unsafe practice and the danger and misery they can bring.

Just because you see someone do something in a particular way, does not necessarily make it right. And I have to state that if the fitter you employed to do the job failed to complete the job in accordance with the regulations, then that is a matter that you should report to their boss and/or Trading Standards. Just consider, most people have passed their driving test, so are qualified, but how many speed, or undertake, or don't wear seatbelts or operate mobile phones whilst driving!

I acknowledge that unless you have a detailed knowledge of the standards, it is difficult to know if your contractor has actually followed them or not.

The law requires that a competent person undertakes all installation, service, repair or removal of all gas appliances and systems. Unless you are deemed competent working on gas appliances is not a DIY job.
