Where do I attach Brake Away Cable

My (removable) towhitch / towbar has no facility to attach the Breakaway cable. I do not want to start drilling holes in the towbar frame work for fear of affecting the frames strength.

In the past I have always put it over the towball assembly. I am sure this is wrong.

What should I do?

Simon,

Klarky is right, where no other mounting point exists you can loop the breakaway cable over the neck of the detachable tow ball arm.

But I've never been happy with this - the reason for a breakaway cable is to apply the caravan brakes if the caravan becomes detached whilst towing - and whilst I've never heard of a detachable tow bar failing at the mount - I feel it would be best to attach the cable to a fixed point on the tow bar.

On our Brink detachable tow bar there are two loops cut into the tow ball mount - which will happily take the breakaway cable clip (the stronger type that doesn't need to be looped back on itself)

Even if you have to replace your break away cable with a longer one, I'd go for fitting it to it's own location on the tow bar and preferably on the mounting at the socket for the removable bit. This would give you safety cover for both the caravan hitch and the detatchable bar coming adrift.

As the cable is a safety device to apply the brakes on the caravan, I'd try to ensure that it covers the bar detatchment as well. Don't rely on looping it around the swan neck ball as it could well slip off just when you want it the most.

Steve.
