Where do your dog’s treats come from?

My wife popped in to a local shop to buy a couple of bags of dog treats. When she was topping up the dog’s treat box she noticed that both packs, one salmon strips, the other chicken slices, came from China. Needless to say we will not be buying those again and will revert to home grown stuff.

Unfortunately a lot of stuff comes from China. It's virtually impossible to avoid completely. We can blame our politicians of all flavours for allowing our own industries to be destroyed. We tend to buy dog treats from B&M, Aldi and Lidl. They may well come from China.

These days it's best to start with the assumption that everything comes from China and then look for the exceptions.

The Chinese lack of quality and standards isn't a new thing - in the mid-80s, as part of their global procurement process, Mattel sourced their soft toys from China but in the UK and Europe each local distribution subsidiary had to re-work these products to replace the interior stuffing which contained all sorts of nasties.

Sadly much of the global public buys purely on price so businesses in developed countries have little choice but follow the herd.

We brought some Pedigree Rodeo dog treats from Asda on the back it says Ireland these might be the exceptions .

Chinese quality and control isn't necessarily their own making. Many western companies outsource their designed products overseas - they are the ones that should be responsible for ensuring that the quality of their manufactured products meets their requirements. Of course the expectation could be as cheap as possible and you have to wonder if the design companies actually check and enforce quality standards.

I've come across some first class Chinese products that are designed and made there. Equally I've come across some utter rubbish but also from western companies as well.

Not dog treats but a while back when away, we went to buy some Salmon from a supermarket and it was only when we looked closely at it, it was Alaskan Salmon processed in China. Didn't bother.

Could just be packaged in Ireland. You get labelling saying Produced in U.K. when in fact the products come from around the world and are packaged here. Look at the recent media articles on Italian tomato pastes. Any guesses where the tomatoes came from? A global world has benefits, it also has disadvantages too.

Top loading washing machines that took thirty minutes to wash the clothes and then another hour with a lint remover. A tumble dryer that could actually be mounted on top of a top loading washing machine - which meant the loading door could only be lifted a few inches.

Cars with headrests that would snap your neck if you got hit from behind.

I’ve suffered Sears best too. So archaic as to be unbelievable. Although being solo I tended to sub contract my household stuff out, which gave more time for skiing and sailing. . But my Canadian Tire car snow brush and socket set stil going strong.

Remember the Ham / Beefburger, fracas a few years ago, Horse and Donkey, meat involved.

My mate in Alaska knows where his meat comes from.
