We have recently bought a 2004 Avondale Osprey and are looking for the best hitchlock to use. We have been told that an Alko 2004-3004 will fit but how does this compare with a Bulldog, and do Bulldog do different sizes.

Many thanks for any advice.

Which is the best hitch-lock?

You need to look at the Sold Secure web-site for their ratings - http://www.soldsecure.com/caravans.htm - fit nothing less than Gold or Diamond rated.

Both the AL-KO and certain Bulldog products are Gold rated - but the AL-Ko has the advantage of being exactly designed for their own hitch - and it's very easy to fit.

P, "Best hitchlock" is a matter of personal choice. I can personally vouch for the Alko as simple to fit, lightweight (compared to others)& it is able to be used whilst the van is hitched to your car, so extra peace of mind on those motorway service breaks.

"Best" is a compromise between security, price and convenience - you'll have to set your own priorities for each of them.

None of them, thieves use a device called a "Drop Box" which can accomodate any Hitchlock. If you use a Hitchlock it would be much better if it had an 18inch piece of angle iron welded across the top to stop the use of a "Drop Box"

Thanks for all of your replies, have gone for the AL-KO so hope it is some deterent to thieves. Could really do with a heavy sharp blade that falls down and chops off the hands it doesn't recognise.

Re comment can be used whilst hitched good for service area stops. It is indeed good for this because it is so quick and easy to fit but do not forget to remove it again before you move off as it can be dangerous not to do so.

Having fitted more different types of hitchlock than most people in the course of my job,(caravan sales/workshop) I have had the problem from time to time where a key has gone missing, thus putting me in the position where I have to remove said item. Alko, no problem.sometimes without damaging the hitch ass.Bulldog different story, we are in big trouble if we loose their keys!!!!
