You should have no problem with a conventional style modern auto.

If the auto is of the electronic clutch and gearbox type it could cause problems.

Auto versions of your shortlisted vehicles should be fine BUT make sure that it's towing limit is adequate. Some vehicles have lower towing limits as autos, than manuals.

Make sure you get an additional transmission cooler fitted even if there's one already fitted or the dealer/manufacturer says it's not necessary.

Most standard fit transmission coolers are simply a pipe that runs in the radiator "bottom" tank which would get a transmission-killing 150 degrees down to 120 but to prevent damage you need to be down to 80 so get an air cooler. If you're buying second hand check if it's ever had a towbar fitted, if it has but no cooler still present then walk away, don't buy it.

Manufacturers "have" to say it doesn't need a cooler because their published towing limit relates to standard specification.

Fiat/Alfa autos shouldn't cause difficulties in theory, it's only the operation that's electronic/hydraulic. The clutch and gears should then operate like a manual.

Hi Euro+RogorL, Many Thanks for your info, Have been looking at the kerbweigh of the Passat Estate and Seat Alhambra Auto both are fine for towing, But can't find the kerbweigh for the Freelander Auto, out of the two which is great for fuel economy is Passat and Alhambra, but do find the freelander heavy on fuel for towing!! What do other Freelander owner have to say about the Auto for towing?, Once again Thank you, Trevor

Trevor - you need to check both the kerbweight AND the towing limit of any potential towcar. For some cars the towing limit is lower than the kerbweight and for these the towing limit is the figure to use.
