Which way now?

Hi everyone,
We are stopping at Whitemead in the forest of dean very soon and from here we are going up to Conway Wales. I have been looking at the road atlas and obviously I want the quickest but also the easyist route I can find, I can do the motorway route M5, M6 across to on A51 Chester then hit the A55 to Conway OR M5, M6, M54 with all manor of options of where to go OR use the A49 upto Shewsbury and then say to the OH which way now? So you see my dilemma, anybody with some idea of which might be the best route please feel free to advise.
Thanks muggler

If I were you I would use the motorway. Anything is better than the A49 between Hereford and Shrewsbury. 52 miles of mostly windy, single carriageway road which has a fair bit of lorry traffic. I live in Hereford and avoid the A49 wherever possible if towing.

You could try google maps then use google earth to map your route, I use this often along side my trusty sat nav

Personally I'd take the A49 Hereford , Leominster, Shrewsbury,A5 Wrexham, Chester,A55 Conwy route as the most direct and possibly quickest when towing.
Far more pleasant than the motorway. Sit back and enjoy the scenery. If you want the best bit of scenery, turn off the A5 at Chirk and then go via Llangollen,Corwen, Betws Y Coed.

Rioja is right regarding the scenery but I'm not so sure about the quickest. Even travelling at night you will encounter a fair bit of HGV traffic and these can't drive to their limits due to the road.
As I said, I avoid it wherever possible and certainly wouldn't feel relaxed sitting back enjoying the scenery knowing I had a queue of traffic behind with nowhere to let them pass. I've driven this road thousands of times and even with blue lights and horns on it's not the easiest of roads for overtaking.

Thanks for all your comments I will have a look at google earth to see if its worth getting off the motorway and use the A roads and I thinks I definetly wont be using the A49
Cheers
Muggler
