Yep, totally stupid idea!
I always weigh a new full cylinder on bathroom scales and write that weight in felt tip on the outside, that weigh (geddit?) Working out tge remaining contents at a later date is easy.
And yes before some pedant tells me bathroom scales aren't that accurate I have a decent set of digital ones and they certainly appear accurate enough for this purpose.
