We've experienced both but to be honest, everyone does have their good and bad days - can't be the easiest of jobs, especially during the Easter break when it's so busy with families - I have ALWAYS made a point of acknowledging good service/site maintenance etc; at the end of the day, you only ever seem to hear about the bad and not about good service - let's all make a little pact to tell wardens when we're happy - you never know, it might help them be a less "grumpy".

My only experience of a Grumpy Warden, two years ago. We had booked in to the Whitley Bay CC site and informed them I would be arriving about 1 o'clock.

We arrived at that time and found the office locked, I waited a few minutes and there seemed to be no one around so decided to find a pitch as I was blocking the entrance to the site. The site was only about one quarter full with ample pitches available.

I lowered the legs, plugged in the electricity, fetched the water etc.

After half an hour my wife and I decided to go to the office and inform them of our arrival, it was then that we were blasted with a torrent of abuse from the warden, his face went red and the veins on his neck stuck out. His wife was there but said nothing.

I replied saying in all my life I had never been spoken to like that..

Needless to say I left the office, packed the van and left in fifteen minutes.

I phoned the Nunnykirk CC site to see if they had any room, the warden said loads of room we won't be there for a couple of hours so just find a yourselves pitch.

As you can imagine I wrote to the CC explaining this episode, they apologised and said the warden was leaving in a few months. Not soon enough I thought.

To say that we haven't come across the odd warden who may be having a bad day, would be incorrect - we are all human beings after all! We just adopt a casual attitude, and if it really is a problem, then I have aired my very few grievances with the clubs concerned, directly!

Rather than get onto the forum and moan, complain to the right people. If they are unaware of your problems, they can't do anything about it, can they???

In donkeys years I have never come across a objectional warden but I can't say that about some members....

To me its a rotten job that someone is happy to do so that I can enjoy my hobby.

As far as we two are concerned they should be a protected species!

We have been caravaning for 38 years and only come across 1 grumpy warden. That was on a managed club site, she spoke to us as though she was the head misress and we were children. Not going into details but we did report her to the caravan club (that is the only time in our life we have ever reported any one) They replied and said the warden was not employed by the club but by the site owner and we can understand that. ( But we notice she no longer works there.) So if you complain to the right people they may be able to act on it. ( or know a man that can.)

I am amazed at the rantings goung on with regards to showers not working, what i ask is wrong with the shower within your van,It is us joe public that turns the shower block into the mess that people moan about, the toilets who cleans with the brush in the bowl after use, nobody every time I used to visite the toilet block they were disgusting, no wonder it takes the wardens ages to clean them out once a day.

I would not have their jobs for all the tea in china.

Hi Royston,

Our van shower is a " wetroom " affair, pretty smally. It's one of the main reasons that we prefer CC sites, as they always have very good facilities and there are four of us. OK for occasional use, but a bit of a pain for everyday use. I usually drool over end washroom vans at the SECC.

Forgot to mention that the water went off when the leccy went off last time out at Killin too. Then the lights came back on and there was a mad rush for the shower cubicles. Unfortuantely, the water didn't re-appear for about another 15 minutes ! There were a few funny comments from the guys in the other cubicles, we were all standing starkers in our stalls waiting on the water. Funny as....!

Alex.

we stopped using club sites about 4 years ago much of which was down to the attitude of the wardens coupled with the outragous prices and have since then stuck to CLs and CSs which seem to be much better on the whole. However since my wife died last year my 6year old daughter have visited the CC site at cheddar. The wardens there this year have renewed my faith, they were very supportive and much more like the wardens of my childhood. Of course it doesn't help when so many caravanners these days are so bloody miserable compared to 30 years ago!!

Been to Oxon quite recently and thought that staff were really friendly to be honest. I'm aware that hasn't always been the case, allegedly but they really couldn't have been more helpful when I last went in there.

So in other words the warden moaned at everybody who was breaking the rules, so what's wrong with that, surely they are there to make sure the rules are obeyed.

We've been to Sandringham several times, and quite frankly, the speed children ride around the site, I am not suprised the warden is being vigilant - after all, it is for the childrens safety! Imagine the consequences of a child being hit by a car coming in the opposite direction!! As far as dogs are concerned, we have never had a problem on either sites.

Pitches are not normally available until 12pm, if you wish to arrve earlier, then it's best to phone the site beforehand.

Have they changed the Wardens at Sandringham since last year, l don't think they have as l am sure l saw them posing the club mag for something.

I am with you Wendy been their several times and they have always been polite and helpful and no we are not Wardens and yes we have two Yorkies which we ensure they use the dog walk and clean up after them.

Seems to me just lately theirs a vendetta about Wardens, always those with children that seem to have the problems, one example we were at a site in Ash Bourne over Easter where they had the usual Easter Egg hunt where do you think they hid the Easter Eggs, all round my pitch nothing around the parents or in laws pitches, wouldn't normally bother us but they started the hunt early morning, of course this set the dogs off barking has young children were running around the van looking for the eggs.

Now if that's not inconsiderate l don't know what is and you wonder why Wardens get grumpy if we had complained, but we refrained and let it pass.

To many parents open the caravan door and boot them out so the y can have their lie in.

Sorry about the moan, we and one child and we know what its like keep them entertained, she loved caravaning when she was young but we always made sure where she was and was not annoying other campers, so please think of others and support the Wardens they have difficult job at best of times.

I suppose it depends on how you approach the warden.

I've been behind people booking in and there have been some right miserable *********s in front of me and we've all come across them walking about on site. Some think that because we pay our membership the wardens are our servants and are in debt to us.

I'll admit that obviously there will be the occasional miserable warden as there are miserable people in all walks of life but overall the wardens I've encountered, Caravan Club, have been pleasant especially if you exchange pleasantries with them.

Regarding clean showers/toilets I never use them. After paying a lot of money for the van I prefer to use the onboard facilities than queue for showers, dirty or clean. I know who has used the shower or whose botty has sat on the toilet seat :O)

Some will say that I've paid to use the showers in the site fees so I might as well use them. Good luck to people if they are subsidised by people like me, I don't mind nor am I complaining. I prefer to use my own for the reasons given.

Next some will be wanting 24/7 shower toilet attendants so they can dry them and wipe their bums ... heh! heh! heh!

I have never had any problems with any warden, on any site.

But i have had problems with other caravanners in the past, loose dogs, out of control children, theft, abuse while fishing by a drunk angler.

I would not have a wardens job at any cost, they have my sympathy.

Dave, you are quite wrong in your assumptions.

I am NOT a Caravan Warden.

However, as in my own job, i would not expect to be called a JOBSWORTH , which is highly disrespectful.

I'll give you a clue.

IF you are ever unfortunate to have to come to A&E in the area where I practice, I will try to deal with you sympathetically.........but if you call me a JOBSWORTH, I CAN make it hurt that bit more" !!

Point taken I hope. :)
