Why do sites charge extra for awnings??

Evening All.

Juat a straight forward question.

Why does a site charge extra(per night) for an awning?

My view is, if I do not use an awning I still use the same pitch therefore taking up the same room. Am I right in thinking the reason for extra charges are due to insurance reasons such as fire risks etc?

Your thoughts please?

Thanks, Dan.

It makes the basic fee look lower. Charges are unrelated to costs.

If sites offered a flat rate, with a discount for no awning, would anyone complain?

Dan and Paula, nothing to do with fire risk with an awning attached. The van will go up quite quickly with or without an awning.

Well I thought maybe bigger fire hazards such as a heater in an awning. Similar reason for why some sites don't accept anything with a canvass top such as folding campers. But yet they'll let a caravan on with an awning...For a few quid extra of course.

I am suprised nobody has thought of the obvious cost that is present, not that the site would actually do something about it :

yellow grass !

Ahh you are going to say "well I use a breathable ground sheet"

Yes true, it's not as bad as with a non-breathable groundsheet, but it still goes a bit yellow.

If they didnt it would probably mean the basic pitch price would go up, so it suits us as we dont have an awning or a dog and there is only 2 of us.

can not see why they charge as they sell you the pitch. so if you can fit the van, and awning onto the pitch i dont know why they charge extra. when you first look at the price i seems good then an awning charge extra for kids extra for pets extra for and annexes. the problem is with club sites and commercal site is they are all short sighted just take our money now and bleed us all dry. when the slow down comes to caravan industry which it will as they have had a few good years we will remember these sites. by the way france and spain work out cheaper than a 2 week break in the uk

Just because they can.

As we are never sure if we'll use the full awning, porch awning or no awning at all until we see the weather, we never prebook an awning. No-one has ever come knocking for more money if we decide to put one up so perhaps this is the way to go.

All the best

Same price for full awning as it is for porch awnings mind even though a porch (sunncamp scenic plus) takes up a third of the room a full awning does, very unfair

From my knowledge of the industry having worked in it there are various reasons in no particular order, greed but mainly damage to the pitch and the cost of putting it right again. In France you hire the pitch and can put what you like on it tents, vans awnings etc all the same cost. However the downside is on some sites they become very cluttered mainly by the med.

I can fully understand if you're damaging the grass. However what if you're on hardstandings which we usually are? Think I'll put it down to greed then.

Thanks, Dan.

I think the question here has been answered, greed, is it not time to boycote these greedy site owners, between site charges and fuel rises how much longer is this passtime/hobby going to be affordable.
