The Highway Code is a common set of guidelines for use by all road users, it's purpose is to take the guesswork out of the situations described above. How on earth is somebody supposed to know what you are trying to convey with your lights if everybody has a different way of using them? For example, just from previous replies, if somebody were to turn on their indicators would you think they were asking you to overtake, trying to thank you or maybe they were indicating their intention to change direction?

As for different headlight flashes having different meanings, I've never heard such nonsense!

And another thing, drivers who insist on flashing their headlights at you at night - don't even get me started!!
Perhaps you headlights need adjusting or fog lights turning off!

the practice of lorries flashing one and other in goes back to when rearview mirrors were so small and vibrated so bad, it was impossible to see when you had cleared the overtaken vehicle. nowdays mirrors are so good, you should be able to see when you are past. if you do get flashed in, once you have moved over one flash of your left indicator should do. flashing your right one could be mistaken by other overtaking vehicles that you are moving out again. you dont need to use your left indicator to change lanes to the left, as this should naturely be your next manouver. excuse spelling. regards raymond h.

This courteous flashing/indicating is not new and I well remember in the 50s/60s before flashers had replaced trafficaters that it was the norm among lorry drivers to acknowledge when headlight flashed in

They did it by turning the lights on and off at night

Thank goodness we now have flashers

I think that indiacating left when rteurning to a nearside line is not a bad thing as its not always possible to see beyond a caravan/lorry and so the vehicle behind is warned that you are pulling in and that their wait is soon to be over

This is especially valid on a motorway if there is a long queue in the middle lane as anyone behind has no idea how many are in front of you and what you are thinking

Wrong on both counts.

The point I was trying to make is do people consider just how dangerous it is to temporarily blind an oncoming driver, even if the flash is well intentioned?
