Why do we swap phone numbers?

We have met many people at several sites (both home and abroard) over the past 8 years or so. We have swapped phone Nos and emails ads with most of them.

Why do we do that? We have not contacted anyone and have not been called by any of them.

Should we just say farewell and admit that what has been a good holiday friendship will never be maintained once we have returned to our real lives back home?

We met people on holiday 19 years ago and we exchanged phone numbers and we are still friends today.

also we exchanged phone numbers with people four years ago while on holiday and we are going away together next year. we have met up a few times inbetween. So some friendships do last
