BS4343 specifies the folowing colours for 110v and 240v equipment:-

110v - yellow

240v - blue

The accepted associated cable colours are:-

110v - orange

240v - blue

Why is it then that most people seem to use orange cable with 240v equipment (plugs & sockets) on caravan sites instead of blue cable?

I haven`t checked but it may be that the BS does not specify that the cable colour must match the equipment oolour.

Before you ask, I use blue artic grade cable which stays pliable even in brass moonkey weather.

I think that`s because garden equipment is fitted with domestic type plugs/sockets not industrial BS4343 plugs/sockets.

Hi James, Orange colour cable is used because this is the direct contrast colour of Green, which makes is the most visible against Green

I think new caravans started being supplied with a mains lead, due to the sub standard home made leads that were being used.

We used a white butyl cable in the old days, did the job but soon looked dirty.

Orange is the best choice, visable and good quality, and the correct rating.
