The subject of extortionate wi fi charges on Club sites has been mentioned before, but what is the latest news? I read that they launched a new charging rate recently, but, as far as I can make out, it still remains horribly expensive bearing in mind that basic site charges are so high already. Surely a members' Club should be able to afford free internet access? Both the Clubs are wealthy and it would be nice to see better value for money.

We went away last week and paid £5 for 5 hours worth of wifi time. However, the signal was not brilliant so it took quite a while for things to load. Also, on one ocassion it told us that we'd used all the credit (I'd only been on for about 50mins) so we had to phone the help line who then restored 4hrs worth of credit back to us (not sure where the other 10mins went!). We also found that one night we weren't able to get a signal at all. Needless to say we still have the majority of our credit left!
£1 per day or £7 per week is a fair price.
you could always get a mobile broadband dongle ??? thats what we use brilliant and not been anywhere where we cant get a signal yet.
You're obviously not visiting the right sites, or you are depending on your point of view. I've got a Vodaphone dongle and whilst it is much cheaper than site wi-fi, I often have problems getting a connection, CC Rookesbury (Fareham) and CC Ramslade (Paignton) to name but 2 recent visits.johnandrew70 said:

We used the CC WiFi in Cirencester and the New Forest over the last two weeks and it worked very well. strong signal on both sites. The charge was £5 for 5 hrs which can be used on any CC WiFi site for up to 6 months.
We have a Vodafone dongle with which we have had mixed results. Can be painfully slow if not on 3G. Been unable to use it at all on some sites. So now we look at the Mobile signal and then decide whether to buy £5 worth or not.

I can't really comment on the reasonableness (or not) of the charges, as the computer is one of the first things to be left at home - switched off and forgotten about for a few days. I go back to being a Luddite and get the news from a newspaper and take the weather as it comes. As for emails - we're on holiday!
SWMBO uses a Three dongle when we're away and has never had any connection issues (she needs her daily facebook fix). I personally prefer to stay off the internet when we're away, but if Im desperate to check anything, or send an email, I just use my phone
Some interesting replies. I travel extensively throughout the year, so I need internet access. In virtually all European countries, wi fi access is very cheap. For instance, in Spain this last winter, I was paying from €7 per week down to zero cost. And that's on commercial sites? I suppose my main point is that the UK Clubs, very wealthy members clubs at that, should be able to provide a service to its members that is at least as cheap as commercial sites in Europe. It's not as if the Club sites are cheap - in fact many commercial sites are as good and cheaper. The Clubs seem to have lost sight of their original roots and are now commercially driven. Their complacency and arrogance are displayed when they insist that their charges are reasonable and when they simply ignore complaints such as mine. The Club mags are full of members' letters of glowing compliments, but you never see a complaint published! Where does all the members' money go anyway??

after some very poor experiences with site wifi either due to cost or signel strength I bought a dongle from 3 G 2 years ago and never looked back, up to press never had any connection issues, in fact it has been so good I no longer take the TV and all the paraphanalia that goes with it, there are hundreds of internet tv sites like catch up TV as well as on demand tv and I player services.
Its £10 for a months usage with 3GB worth of downloads but the good thing is streaming video does not seem to use any of the allowance and there is never a problem getting a top up if required her indoors is not to keen on watching TV on the computer though so this year I am going to take the flat screen TV and connect the lap top to the TV's PC input.
IMO site WIFI is just a waste of time and money.

As others have said, for those people with limited download requirements (ie mainly email and browsing) some sort of 3g service will no doubt be cheaper than the extortionate wifi rates found in hotels and some campsites. I do tend to agree with the OP re the members club v commercial nature of the CC. But then as an IT professional one of the joys of being in the van is leaving the laptop, smartphone etc at home..
Spoke too soon. On the CC site at Malvern and cannot get a signal on my Three dongle. My phone which is on Tesco (O2) gets a brilliant signal! Had to buy one of their inflated priced connection cards. works on time and not download so you need to remeber to log off even if you switch off the computer.
