Hello everyone. Having just received the new CC Handbook, I see that all of the sites we have booked advertise Wi Fi access. I hope I can use this as a sweetener for my daughter when on holiday. What do I need to do to get access for 15 -30 minutes per day? I should add that her laptop is Wi Fi compatible. I suppose it's a relatively small concession given that we have no tv and she's dragged around every National Trust property in a 50 mile radius! Best Wishes, Butler
 
CC sites wi-fi is provided by Ke Connect who run the clubs Ke-Zone system.

Ke-Zone are partners with BT openzone, if you are a BT internet customer on the right plan you can use the clubs Ke-Zone hot spots with your BT login for no charge.
 
I have one of those BT Broadband contracts that gives me 250 minutes BT Openzone usage per month, which enables use with "partners" such as Ke-zone. Has been very useful on CC sites and elsewhere.

However it was a sweetener to take out an 18 month contract which is about to expire.

BT are soliciting me to take a further 12/18 month Broadband contract, but and for me its a big "but" that Openzone plus partners add-on is no longer included.

So its bye bye BT as to buy the Openzone plus partners access is stonkingly expensive for a casual user.

Make really sure you log-off properly otherwise you quickly waste entitlement.

Re the original question; you can buy access as and when needed on site but at a price. So with her WiFi equiped Lap top you are already set up; oh and take oodles of funds!.

Take the daughter to Mac Donalds, or Whetherspoons there access is free. If you are with BT then you still get use of Openzone its self, not the partners bit, so that gets you free WiFi in Cafe Nero. If with BT, elect for the free BT FON extension, this opens up your options.
 
Hi i believe the wi-fi access is not free?

You will need a wireless enabled pc/laptop and to access the network you purchase a card from reception with an access code which you tap in and gives you network access for a set amount of time.

We did the pay and use option at both CC and commercial sites for the same reason as yourself, 15 year old daughter who needed her daily fix of facebook, email and Bimbo sorry I meant Bebo.

Certainly worked a treat and what seemed to be a lot of money for a short time was fine as long as the on air period was rationed. Infact it works out cheeper that a Big Muc cardboard burger for 3.

Like the idea of wetherspoons though. I can visualise it now at Wetherspoons in Weymouth, row of spotty teenies with thier noses pressed against the laptop typing wazup to thier mates while mum and dad enjoy a Chilli and pint of old dogsbreath.
 
Have you looked at getting a broadband dongle?

I think you can get them on pay as you go (have to pay upfront for the dongle on some netowrks though) you then just buy bundles to suit your needs.
 
Whilst RogerP's advice would be a good solution for most mature users servicing emails, reading the papers and a bit of other web browsing, my alarm bells start ringing in its context to a daughters likely use. If that as I suspect involves video social sites, Skyping and to a lesser extent music then it will eat the GB allowance. Over that and it can then become obscenely expensive.

Unlike all the WiFi I have used which are charged on a timed basis, the mobile internet is costed on a data transmitted basis.

Suggest a bit of homework is needed, to ascertain the use and then the likely cost.

Try to be constructive rather than critical, cheers John

Have you checked to see if you can use your mobile phone as a modem with the laptop. I know it possible with Orange.

Its what I do but PAYGo is very expensive to surf so I only check my emails.
 
Check the coverage before you pay. I found at Chatsworth and Chester unless you are very near the site transmitter receception is nil. You dont want to to go to information booth every time you want to use the laptop
 
Hi. The coverage at the Centenary site in the New Forest last year was awful so I got a complimentary voucher from the company who provide the service.

I am going to get a Dongle from Vodafone. PAYG

We're BT Broadband users as well and I have unlimited wi-fi allowance at hotspots when away from home using BT Openzone/Fon.

It allows me to travel and run the business, I also connect via broadband speed mobile phone if wi-fi is not available.

Changes in BT Broadband's wi-fi allowance concern me. I've spoken to BT today and I'm assured that unless you want to change your package the BT agreement should just continue onwards with no change and your wi-fi allowance continues. They also assure me that some of the new packages will still include free wi-fi usage.

Our home service had two accounts, one for Broadband package and another for BT phone. A couple of years ago BT called and offerd to combine the packages under one direct debit deal.

As far as I can make out we get the top range Broadband service and on Fon it clearly shows that we have unlimited usage not the old 250 minutes per month. It's a family account and my husband often uses the Openzone/Fon usage when he is away the same as I do, so we can be talking via the same account both away from home. We use another provider for home phone call billing and get a credit rebate from our monthly BT direct debit as we do not use them for call billing. I've looked at various phone line, internet and call billing packages and ours gives the best all round deal for our needs.

I can't fault BT's service, they were very helpful earlier. I went on to the broadband online chat service first and then called them to confirm that the first advice was correct and wi-fi allowance at hotspots continues.

ps. The forum has made my day again. I use Facebook, "bimbo", Skype, MSN and Twitter. I have a Ipod Touch and download music, video and talking books. I also like McDoanlds wraps. I feel 40 years younger guys after reading your comments on your girls.

Thanks for your comments, however we might be at cross purposes. Lets restate the situation I have with BT.

Its not use of the BT Openzone/FON hotspots that they are taking from me, these stay and I will explain later, but the use of hotspots that are owned by Openzone's partners. ie the likes of Ke-zone and T-Mobile [CC sites and Starbucks being ones I will really miss].

What they have said is my 18 month contract gave me a voucher equivalent to 250 minutes a month, so in all a 4500 minutes voucher. When that is used up that is it, it was a "promotion" to sign up and its validity is until those minutes are used, its not time related. Apparently I could have pigged them in short time or I can eak them out to beyond the expiring 18 months.

To keep an Openzone account that I can use at partners hotspots as well as their own hotspots they want me to pay an additional fee [ was offered

Yes, predictive text to and "Ow r u doin/ Il b l8 2night" easy.

Thousand + texts a month to use and less trouble than talking. Weather and pleasantries take up to much of a working day.
