Wifi abroad

In the past I've used Wifi where available on the campsites, but this can mean a trek to reception or similar to pick it up. Has anyone used wifi via a dongle? I appreciate they're likely to work out expensive, but we're only talking about one month a year, so a pay-as-you-go one could be worth-while? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry - should have said. I have a wireless card at the moment, but it's only on BT Openzone via our Home Hub and we haven't found anywhere abroad where this works.

I have used my Vodafone Mobile Broadband dongle in Europe but this can be done only if you have a monthly contract not by PAYG. It is pretty expensive, although quite convenient. It costs
