WIfI internet in UK

Coming to UK in June/July/August. Touring extensively and would like to have our own internet access. Can anyone advise best ISP provider and what coverage we can expect. We will not be in the towns, want to go into the country.

As others are saying you are more likely in the country side to get a "Broadband via mobile" signal that actual WiFi.

"Broadband via mobile" is not WiFi but connects to the internet via the mobile phone infrastructure, and requires a special dongle or phone with that facility. As has also been said even that has extremely variable coverage and data speed, can be good, can be slow and can be non existent.

True WiFi is extensively available at pubs, coffee shops, libraries, hotels, fuel service stations, hotels, some campsite etc normally on a prepaid subscription but in selected locations its free. Some of the players have partner deals with other providers eg BT Openzone/Tmobile/Kezone.

Cloud has good coverage but has come out of the partnership deal.

I personally am with BT Openzone and that gets me pretty good coverage particularly because of its partnerships. However unlike "Broadband via mobile" you have to go to a hotspot, not often an issue as we call in at Starbucks or Cafe Nero every other day anyway. Free non commitment WiFi can usually be obtained at McDonalds berger houses, JD Wetherspoons pubs and public libraries.

An alternative option is to be with the International FON organisation, with membership of that you can access all BT's Openzone hotspots including many domestic ones, but with that you cant use BT's partners. FON membership can be obtained for a modest fee or might be available free with some IPS services as is the case here in the UK with BT home Broadband.

Cheers John

Hi All,

Just reporting back to base - we are now in deepest darkest Essex and connecting via our Virgin Broadband dongle for the first time without any problems. Pleasantly surprised by the speed - This is the life!
