wind up 'kit'

Wondered if anyone has anything to say about windup lantern/torch/radio.Any good ones or ones to avoid or are they really not any good.

Being new to all this we are starting to buy 'kit' anything that doesn't need batteries or plugging in seems a good idea but are they any good in practice?

we have a wind-up radio which to be honest we never wind-up - find it works much better on batteries. don't have anything to recommend then I'm afraid. Mark (",)

We have one in the van, its hardley worth the effort.It takes ages to wind up and lasts a short time, Also they are heavy and bulky.

Better to buy a small radio with batteries

We got fed up with torch batteries always being flat when we needed them - which is not all that often, even camping.

So we tried a "wind up" torch.

Now we have one at home, one in each car, and one in the van. A few minutes winding gives light for ages, and never in the dark for lack of a battery again!

We have recently bought two hand held torches that do not require batteries. To charge them the pistol grip handle is squeezed vigourously for approx. 30 seconds and there is sufficient life to use the torch continuously for approx. 45 minutes. Torches are small enough to fit in a purse or pocket. They give sufficient light for normal use on site and I have used one when I had trouble with my daughter's car. Cost

I think this is the torch that Fogey and colin are talking about.. they are about

they sell a very good wind up torch in morrisons supermarket, it's about a fiver it runs on led lamps and lasts for about half an hour after 2 mins winding.

They are not great as search lights but for the treck to the loo's or back from the pub they are great.
