Are they any good? Do they throw out as much light as a battery operated torch?

Thanks.

Hello Lisa,

There is no simple yes/no answer to this one.

It depends what you want it for and on the size of the bulb, the efficiency of the hand powered generator, and the capacity of the rechargeable cells in the torch, not to mention the type of bulb or LED.

I keep one as an emergency torch in my car, but they are not as convenient as conventional battery torch when camping, as much as anything the noise of having to crank the handle is a disturbance when using a tent.

Still it does mean that we know when our Cubs are having a midnight feast!

The simple answer is that these torches are very usefull.

You can guarantee that at 11-30pm in the pouring rain when your in your best clothes and the car decides to have a puncture, your trusty battery torch decides to go on strike too.

The light from a wind up torch is sufficient to see without being like a search light and also after the initial purchase cost the running is free. No more fumbling around for batteries or paying for new ones every month or so.

John has pointed out one down side and that is the noise level of the dynamo mechanisum. However my torch gives about 45 mins of light for 30 seconds of winding and also if you wind it up before bed time it does still hold it's charge. So I wouldn't be too concerned.

We actually have 3 - 1 in the car , 1 in the caravan and 1 in the house - and we do wind the handle from time to time :)

They are never moved from their storage points and are ready for immediate use

Lisa,

We have three wind up torches prompted from the time that my battery torch let me down when I needed it most. Two of the larger torches have five leds and even charges your mobile phone in an emergency. You can even listen to the radio (fm)only and one has a panic alarm fitted.

Try QVCUK.co.uk if you want further info?

should have said the light is even better than most torches as the circle of light is even all over, no dark patches ( rings )on the subject that you want to see. Hope that makes sense?
