On my new Elddis the Winterhoff 3000 stabiliser cracks terribly when driving. Although the pads seems in good condition (on the + sign), I have replaced the front one and cleaned with sand paper the back one. The tow ball is sound blank metal and cleaned thourougly.

What else to do?

I red somewhere in a forum that talcum powder would help. Anyone experience with this?

Rob, after you sanded the pad, did you wash the pads with brake cleaner to remove any abrasive?

Talcum powder will act like a lubricant and negate the friction properties of the hitch, not recommended

I read that you are best to remove the black paint from the ball, as when the towing head is gripped on to the ball you can get bits of paint come off and clog the hitch head up causing creaking.

As Damian says clean the head with brake cleaner to wash any bits out.

Thanks Damian and Martin E. I cleaned the towing ball with sandpaper and washing petrol. Is brake cleaner possibly better?
Hi Rob

In my opinion I would think so as it does not leave any residue unlike petrol.
