hi smiley

it seems you may be trying to make a server wireless network

I dont think it will work like that

I am sure the server has to be hard wired to the router

I'm sorry if i've got the wrong end of the stick but for what it's worth;

I am no expert at all but I got mine working but it took all day.

The telephone cable comes first to a splitter and then branches, one to the phone and one to the router. In the back of the router are some sockets ( 1 or 2 or more) called Ethernet sockets. They are plug in ones. My big old computer is plugged into one of these and works fine. The router also has and aerial to transmit through. My laptop has a receiver but it can be switched one and off (on mine Fn + F3) so check that it's on. There should be a light lit that looks like a rotary clothesline. If you search for a radio network on your laptop you should find yours and probably some of your neighbours too. As yours is not protected yet cos' you haven't set it up it should work but it isn't secure. You have to set a password that is very long, so long that it will generate one for you. Write it down. You will need it for any other laptops you have in the house to log on to it. That's all my son does when he visits, I have to read it out though as it 16 or 32 long.

I read and re-read the instructions and I know it took some time to get it all working but like any job, I could do it a lot quicker now.

And that is the sum total of my knowledge on this. If you're stuck or see the red mist coming, have a break, and come back to it tomorrow. We've all been there.

I went down that road once gave up in the end took it all back and got my money back. Just would not work.

If I was tempted again I would get PC world to fit it all up for a total cost of around

Well going wireles was the best thing for me,outwent a hugh desk that had a scanner & printer large 17" screen (weighed aton)and the computer in came a laptop and and a scanner/printer combined , all working with each other via wireless. You can be anywhere in the house with your laptop and your printer/scanner will pick up the signal to print.

Security is vitial I have 5 sets of keys all differnt combinations numbers and letters, to discourge others trying to use my networks.

I am on Vigin Broadband, and in my area there are no other signals which is great.

I agree with Royston, we have 3 wireless laptops and 2 X.Box live coming off our router, we did have to upgrade our router but we have no quibbles and very fast internet considering all the above, we are with talk talk and have been for over 3 years getting on 4 years.

Mind you it does help when you have a 17 year old daughter in the house studing computing.

hi all

I expected smiley to come back and tell us exactly what the hell he is trying to do, from his post I assumed he was trying to set a wireless network with all the (hard wired) peripherials running from one base computer and connecting others to it by wireless reciver.

in theroy it should work ok, but in practice never does because so many factors come in to play to block the signal from connecting the m/cs together.

the simplest way to set up a wireless network is to use the router/modem as a gateway, with it's own IP address (which is the way previous posters have there's set up)the other way (which is the way I do it)is to have a base computer hard wired to the modem/router by the use of a RJ45 straight connector cable (not twisted pair)and a LAN (local area network)set up incoperating all the peripherals onto one computer which is perminantly swiched on.

once the network has been named and encrypted it will have its own name, IP address, and encryption code, any other wireless enabled computer can then connect to the LAN by searching for networks pick the LAN name from the list and enter the encryption code and connect, when this is done the network will assign a new IP address for the new network terminal and remember it(so you don't have to enter it again)you will then be able to use the perpherials on the base computer (like printer) remotely once connected.
