We are very lucky to live in Cornwall and we love spending time away in our caravan. We like to go away for weekends so therefore can not go to far as its not worth it travelling miles for a weekend break. We wish more campsites would open all year round you know the nice ones with hardstanding pitches, sheltered hedges and clean warm shower blocks. I think there is definately a need for this now as people go away all year round and modern caravans are home from home. The nice ones near us that are open are always full when we try and book so this shows there is a need for them. Come on campsites if you have hardstanding you could open all year and with abit of advertising you could do quite well I reckon. Must be modern up to date sites thats what people want. Does anyone else feel the same? Look forward to your comments folks.

I know exactly what you mean - it's a similar story up here in East Yorks - there are a few farms, which are fine (trying one this weekend) but would like a bigger site to stay open.

Maybe tax purposes or something? It seems to be the 5 vans or less sized sites that stay open.

Mandy,

I know what you mean. We have the same problem here in Wales.

However you have hit the nail on the head when you say you do not want to travel far. Unless you can persuade a large number of caravanners in Cornwall to caravan at weekends and some during the week in the winter it is not worth sites opening.

If only a couple of sites are open they will fill up.

The Caravan Club site at Looe is open all year and i have just checkrd on its occupancy levels and it has plenty of vacancies.

However if you look at the occupancy levels of C.C.sites open all year in the Midlands quite a few are fully booked at weekends, due to the the large caravanning catchment area.

We both live in lovely parts of Britain but it can have it's downside.

Could be planning permission that is the problem that prohibits opening for some parks.

I remember staying from Monday to Friday at the CC site at Pembury a few years ago in December and for 3 of those nights I had a choice of two shower blocks and only me to use them.

I think we have the same problemss all over the country, of 110 C.C. & C. sites only 11 are open all year round. Do you think we belong to a six month of the year club?

I submitted a similar posting and one reply was to do with planning permision? we use our van all year round and travel to Craigie Gardens which is just about 1 hour away during the winter(we dont want to be travelling for hours during the winter months)How many of us use our vans all year round?

Yvonne,

We use our caravan all year round. Caravanning in snow is magical.Going away for 2 weeks on Thursday to Southport and Chatsworth Caravan Club sites.Snow is forecast!!

However as i said earlier most all year round sites are very quiet during the week.

Even when Chatsworth Caravan Club site opening was extended to 4th January, weekends were booked up but midweek was dead. It will be interesting to see, now it is open all year, how busy it gets in the week.

When it snows, or it is very cold and rains etc, the warden's telephone starts to ring with cancellations.

Over many years we have found there are people who say they are "all the year round caravanners" and those who are true winter caravanners. For more sites to stay open all year they need more true winter caravanners.

Much as I would also like to see more sites open in the winter it does all come down to running costs and planning permission.

Many locals will object to all the year round opening so councils will not allow it.
