Witter towbar

I have just had a new towbar fitted (Witter) I have an ALCO hitch stabiliser on my Avondale Dart 470/2. My question is the towball is painted, am I correct in saying that the paint needs to be removed down to bare metal, to enable the stabiliiser to operated correctly.

Hi Colin, yes you're quite correct, clean the paint off the towball,( I'm assuming you have had the extended neck tow ball) any paint will clog up the friction pads in your stabiliser, another thing is to keep the ball free from grease and general traffic film, (especially if your car is a Diesel) the best way to do this or should I say I find the best way is to keep a can of Brake cleaner aerosol in the boot of the car and give it a squirt and a wipe with kitchen roll before hitching up....

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply, the tip about the brake cleaner aerosol is good, I will get one. see that you tow with a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0 CDX Diesel, is it a good tow car as I have just bought a Hyundai IX 35 2.0 diesel, but not yest towed with it, but by all accounts it should be ideal for my van

Hi Colin, I think my Santa fe is a good tow car, the only thing I could critisise is a slight lack of power, my engine is only 111bhp, I think yours is 134ish bhp, the main issue is probably the fact our van is a 26ft twin axle, having said that I fitted a diesel tunning box and the difference was phenomenal, it made itself felt when solo but when I dropped the van onto the back it really did make it's presence felt. Stability superb, general handling of the complete outfit, never felt anything other than excellent, when overtaking or being overtaken I have never felt the van take control of the car, I can't coment on the Ix35, other than what I've read you really shouldn't have any problems, I've had my Santa fe for 2 years now, would I buy another, yes without a doubt.....
