Hi all you ladies

It seems reading the forum there a lot of women that tow the van themselves to places and then hubby follows up later !

I'd love to do this as I get a lot more hols than he does and I could be off with the kids and meet him at weekend!!

Anyway the question is how many of you did the cc course, how many learnt from the years of hubby towing and just went for it, what particular problems did you find and what was that first time like !!! P.s respect to you all,it just shows that anything they can do...

Good for you, both my wife and sister in law

tow with or without male escort.

Down in the sticks, towing courses don't exist

both learnt on quiet dual carriage ways, main roads, etc.

practice, practice. practice is the by word

my wife can tow happily through London

Share the driving, what happens if single driver has

personal accident.

Thanks for the replies, I feel ok about having a go but Its the time when you arrive on site that worries me, everybody likes to watch you reverse in anyway(for some reason)think the fact that its a lady driver would add to their fun!!!!Also do you manage to get the awning up without hubby there! ?

Tina, My advice is if you want to tow, do it.

I bought my van 3 years ago and up until recently I always towed alone. I had been nervously towing for about 6 months before I picked up courage to enrolled on a CC manouvering course. It was brilliant. It gave me so much confidence in my own ability. Until that time I was full of self doubt.

As far as reversing is concerned I think that is simply down to practice. Until I did the course I would NEVER even attempt to reverse. The course gave me the opportunity to learn the principles and practice with fellow learns. The small group(there were 6 on my course - 5 men varing in age from mid 30's to a retired chap + me) meant that we gave each other lots of encouragement. Now I tend to 'have a go' at reversing whenever I get the opportunity.

The only problem I had when I towed alone was hitching up again. Even though generally I am quite good at reversing I found judging how far to reverse the car back towards the jockey wheel was a problem/ On the course someone suggested I take a bean cane/stick (or similar) pop it in the ground next to the jockey wheel and use that as my guide. Alternatively I simply ask a complete stranger to help.

If you do enrol on a course, start making your list of questions now. I went armed with a whole list of things I wanted to ask. ;-)

Good luck

Sorry - posted a new topic not a reply!

Hi Tina

Last year I decided to buy a caravan. Husband wasn't interested in caravanning at that time. So I read up on everything I could regarding purchasing a van and towing. I then went out with a trusted neighbour who is a seasoned caravanner, to view several vans. I bought one and the owner delivered it the following weekend. I booked for us (my family, not me and the neighbour!!!), to go away (to a site approx 100 miles from our home) for our first trip. Anyway, I'll get to the point now, we couldn't have picked a worse day to go on holiday if we had wanted to. Just 15 miles into our journey, we hit gridlock due to a bad crash further up the road. This meant detours, queques on the dual carriageway and single carriageways for an hour or so, diversions, total gridlock, impatient motorbikes, you name it, I met it. Anyway, several hours later, we arrived at our destination. I did have a go at reversing onto the pitch but gave up and we simply unhitched and pushed the van onto the pitch. Had a great two week holiday. On the way home, we got totally lost, ended up going down a dirt track and up a one in six hill, (met two terrified cyclists at the top of the hill who dismounted upon seeing us inching our way up the hill). Drove for miles and miles in the opposite direction until I decided to stop and reverse in the hope of getting home......

I consider myself to be quite capable now, I changed my car for a more suitable vehicle. I have just moved the van to a place with plenty of land because my reversing is good but not brilliant and I can practice reversing there in peace.

My advice to you is to go for it - the CC courses sound excellent and really good value I would have gone on one but it meant having to wait a few months and I couldn't do that, I just wanted to take off.

p.s. On another outing, we took a wrong turn and I ended up driving round Sainsbury's carpark not once but twice with the van on the back. I need to get GPS!!

Good luck and keep us informed.

Lisa
