.believe it or not I learnt to drive on one of these tractors but it was fitted with wheels and tyres!

We had one on our farm and the year was 1956. (I was 9 years old)

The engine ran on Tractor Vaporising Oil (paraffin) but had to be started on petrol to warm the engine up first. There were two fuel tanks for this purpose and involved a simple switch over once the sufficient temperature had been reached.

You had to remember to turn the fuel off to stop the engine; otherwise the carburettor was full of the wrong fuel for starting next time you used the tractor.

We also had a set off half-tracks, which could be fitted instead of the rear rubber shod wheels.

These weighed at least a ton each so would have been no good in snow.

I've never seen this type of screw drive... you learn something every day!

Well Sprocket,

Speaking as H&S consultant, my comments would be: it depends on what the screw drive sponsons were made of, if metal they need some sort of enclosure/guard to prevent personal injury, but the biggest concern would be the exposed chain drives to the sponsons!

Having said that what a brilliant idea & effective solution to the initial problem......mobility on snow!
