Woodwork question.

Nothing to do with caravans however my wife acquired an old table which is about 3' x 2' x 2'(length, depth and height. It has to be solid wood as it takes two of us to lift it. She woudl like to refurbish it as it has been standing outside for some time. Thinking of sanding it down and then perhaps a varnish. There are no scratches on the table, but varnish or whatever is on it looks a bit jaded. What is the advice on sanding by hand and varnish as I am useless at DIY. Thanks.

I have used fine wire wool with white spirt to remove varnish on some beech occasional tables. It doesn't tend to give marks like sandpaper.

If its it varnish might be easier to remove with paint stripper else you need a belt sander and plenty of elbow grease. Then increasingly finer grades sanding varnish or wax and in between coats.after First coat a very fine sand then subsequent coats ie probably 2 will do Rub with fine wire wool to get a smooth dustfree finish.

Thanks as never knew about the wire wool. Varnish is hardly noticeable on the table bit is lightly "blotchy" .

If it is blotchy or bits coming off it needs to all come off for a decent job.

I have nothing to add to the advice; except it’s not called woodwork ( or metalwork) any more. It is called “Resistant materials”. 😀
