With a drop of Brandy as an ABF. ( Absolutely Bloody Final) before bed.
ABF as far as I am concerned started in The Vale Hotel Cricklade back in the 50s when the village Bobby was clock watching closing time.
Or was it a Bristow’s Mess Room slang🤔

After hours, our local bobby used to come in the back door, have a drink with us and then carry on his rounds on his Velocette for another hour and then repeat!

Nowadays you would not longer have "one for the road". I used to carry a six pack as a survival kit just in case.

On Fridays after work, in the Sgt & WO's mess they always had a a "prayer" meeting. Basically a get together for a booze up and to remember old comrades that answered the sunset call!

In the 70’s we were working on building a Pontins in Prestatyn. Those were the days when pubs in Wales closed at 10pm. As we wanted a session, someone suggested going to Dyserth. On arrival we found a full pub. As 9:50 came about, they called last orders. Then the towel went on. And the doors were locked. But the customers took no notice. Next, the towel came off and plates of sandwiches emerged.

We were there for a while.

They were a great treat.

This was clearly a common thing at this pub. I am surprised that the police were not aware. Or perhaps they were among the customers?

A similar thing happened in Liverpool. We were drinking at my local which was about to close at the 3pm official time. Someone said they knew where to go, so we jumped in the car and followed. (Strange that driving did not seem to be a problem back in the late 60’s). We were taken of all places to the Police club. It was heaving, and no questions asked.

A very different time.
