How many times do we hear 'once in a x year event'? Funny how that year comes around quite soon isn't it.

Emmerson, fair points, but, I did say only 'some' of these flooded houses are built on the flood plain.

I didn't specifically name Cockermouth or Workington, I don't even know where exactly they are. No offence intended.

I expect trying to get planning permission in the lakes to build houses is very, very difficult. Maybe they should rethink this for some of the people affected by 'at risk' houses. It seems we are going to get many more occurences of these type of flash floods for whatever reason. The twee cottage at the riverside surely now cannot be sustainable. Give these people a way out. Knock it down and allow them a plot higher up the side of the valley. Sounds sacrilegious? Its only going to flood again and destroy someones life.

We as caravanners try and get a lot of use from the lakes and so we pay for the infrastructure thats there. Allowing a few more campsites to open would also be beneficial, both to us and the local community there. Its the only way I can think of that I personally can offer any help to the area.

Anyway, I hope this rain stops for them.
Scouse, no offence was taken. I'm sorry if my post came across that way. I just wanted to point out the victims probable viewpoint.

I wonder if the army will be sent to help rebuild the infrastructure, erect temporary bridges and to help alleviate some of the hardship in the area.

I know the area well as I am from South Cubria and my daughter lives near Cockermouth and works in Workington. We have heard graphic descriptions of the devastation caused by the floods but also of the fantastic kindness and generosity of local folk. People were ringing the local emergency centres and offering beds/food/spare clothing to total strangers.

The main sreet of Cockermouth is a disaster area and the damage will have pushed some local businesses over the edge as the local economy was already very fragile.

I hope Bob Geldhof et al will be organising some massive fund raising events........

BTW, if anybody thinks the title of this post a little insensitive, I posted before any floods and just noted the amount of rain falling.

Now. In Liverpool there is a tourist attraction called the Liverpool Duck or something. I'm sure many other cities have got these now too. It is an ex army amphibious vehicle that drives tourists around the city then plunges into the docks and floats around for a bit. Would it work to use them as buses to take people from one side of Cockermouth and Workington to the other. There are people who need to get to school/work, etc the other side of the river.

Just a thought.

Obviously, I'm talking about when the flow of the river subsides and makes it feasible of course.

Any ex-military on here to answer?

its a very tragic sitiation to lose everything like that , but these storms and floods are not rare its that the records only record back to 1727 , there was a far worse storm in 1703 ,and 15000 people lost there lives 8000 were sailors trapped in ships the storm swept across southern England and Wales

I am unable to enlighten you as there is no suggestion in my post that there was anything 'wrong' in what has gone on in the past and am at a loss as to how you have read it in that way.I suppose that it was rather a clumsy way of suggesting that 'charity begins at home.' Certainly if anyone has interpreted it in any other way (including yourself) and taken offence, then I apologise. Your rather sarcastic post ('So Ron') seems to have missed the main thrust of my message which was about the devastation caused and the response of the local population.

This is an area which will need a huge investment of funds and any help that anyone can provide by charity events or donations will be invaluable.
