Two weeks , Christmas and New Year , Cornwall.

Last two years weve been to Moffat just over the border into Scotland, Leave 28th december return around 3rd of january. 2008 it was -5 when we arrived the ice started to thaw the day we returned home but it was sunny everyday we were there. last year there was 6-8 inch of snow on the ground all the time we were there, Hope its the same this year, Prepare for cold weather and you wont go far wrong.

BTW assuming it is not very windy, is it a good idea to put the awning up or just not bother? The space isn't essential but I wondered if the awning would add an insulating layer?

Hi Mel yes put the awning up even a porch it will keep out draughts around the door, we also cook in ours on a small electric griddle! why dirty the kitchen area

Our porch awning will get a good airing. Easier to erect than the large one and somewhere for all those muddy boots and paws and wet coats; and the empty wine bottles

Darrell, we've been away in the van over Christmas and/or New Year several times, it's brilliant. We've stayed at the Sandringham CC site for Xmas 3 times, last time was Xmas 2007, they had a lovely Christmas fair and an ice rink there (on the Sandringham estate I mean, not the CC site lol). And of course you get to see the Royal family go to church on Christmas morning, which is fab if you like the Royal family (we do). Last year we stayed at Old Oaks in Glastonbury, which is one the best parks we've ever been to. The owners put on a little party with complimentary wine and nibbles in the evening on Christmas Eve, that was really nice. If you do go away at Christmas, wherever you go it will be a great atmosphere, especially if the site makes a bit of an effort too. Loads of people decorate their vans (yes, we did, or should I say I did, despite my 'bah humbug' hubby! lol). And everyone is so friendly and happy (probably drunk, hehehe). Mel - yes, put your awning up, it will definitely help to keep out draughts (who wants a gale force wind blowing in your face when you open the door in the morning? Mind you, would help to clear your hangover pretty sharpish!!). And if the weather's bad, you can keep your wet/muddy coats/boots in there, rather than in the caravan (hate that). If you've got some sort of awning warmer, they'll soon dry.

We're away for the New Year. Really looking forward to it.

Like Dusty, we'll have the porch awning up. I can fit two decent size dog crates in there, it's brill because when the dogs get dirty paws, they go straight in their crates to dry off. Plus our boots/jackets hats are kept in the porch awning if they get wet.

We have not been away at Christmas as yet, planning on doing that next year. We have been away for new year every year since we started caravanning 10 years ago. This year we are off the Bearsted CC site from the 27th Dec to the 2nd Jan.

We're going up to Ord House country park in Berwick again for the New Year.
Brilliant fun last year with 8 inches of snow falling while we were there and a party in the clubhouse.
Getting off the site was a problem for some as the snow was so deep but everyone helped out and the site owners brought in a tractor to pull the heavier vans out.
I'd definately recommend winter holidays - Can't beat that fresh crisp air as you emerge first thing in the morning and head out for a walk around the site then back for a hearty breakfast and a cuppa - lovely!

We've been away for the last five Christmas and/or New Year breaks, and we generally go to Sandringham CC site, as it's not that far from home if the weather does turn really bad. Most people decorate their caravans, some of them really go to town, and they look lovely, when you see all the lovely lights switched on after dark, it's a fantastic atmosphere - much better than sitting at home!!

We always put our porch awning up, it keeps the cold out, and is somewhere to put boots and wet coats, and towel the dog down. LOL

The suggestion gets a very cold reception from family.We are the only ones who have a caravan so it would mean us leaving family behind.One of these days I will drop the guilt complex and just do it. Nor Christmas but New Year in sunny Mojacar, assuming there is fuel available through France 28t December.
However, New Year Eve celebration for me will be a / several still G&Ts and an early night having driven 1200 miles in the previous 3 days.
But it's worth it !

In 1960s quite often caravanned at Christmas in Sprite Alpine with single glazed glass windows and open flame gas fire , and no EHU - lots of condensation and ice round the edges but better than staying with in-laws.

We have a similar isue, hence the compromise of New Year in the van, Christmas at home. We don't do big family parties at New Year, and will see offspring et al at Christmas.
Thanks for the advice about the awning, I will take one along. Will pass on the towelling of muddy dogs but definitely good for coats and empties.

Have the same problem with the exception of a cold reception coming from Her Ladyship. She wants to be with the grandchildren but I point out that, as they are thinking of doing, our daughter and family are talking of going to Cornwall for Christmas next year and they wont worry about us. Also our son/daughter in law are spending Christmas Day with us.
I did have plans to go to either Spain or Portugal for 3 months but that is becoming increasingly unlikely, either now or in the future

The only option available to me if I want to achieve these aims is divorce
