Hi Jaqueline,

My first question to be asked here is regarding the caravan. Is the stated weight of 1300kg laden or unladen? I will assume this is the Laden weight (M.T.P.L.M.). If this is the case, fully laden the Picasso would be a 100% match (Diesel model) as opposed to the recommended 85% rule. But please read on...

The second question I ask is what Picasso model and engine size are you thinking of buying? It does make a difference.

Firstly weights. The 1.6i petrol model weighs in at 1240 kg as opposed to the Diesel models weighing in at around 1300kg; that weight being the car, full tank of fuel and driver.

My advice would be to opt for a diesel model not just for this extra weight but better pulling power at low revs. Also, the fuel economy is far better. 61.4 mpg at best and approx 47mpg around town.

I tow a Bailey Ranger 470/4 (MTPLM 1172KG) with my Picasso 2.0 Ltr Hdi with no problems whatsoever and whilst towing, the fuel consumption is approx 32 mpg.

As stated, the kerbweight of the Picasso is 1300kg, That is the car, a full tank of juice and driver.

The actual weight of the car with say 2 adults, 2 kids and a full kit of caravanning gear would probably be nearer 1500kg. 85% match being 1275kg.

My advice would be to pack the pic with the heavy items and only carry lightweight items in the caravan.

I in no-way condone overloading. I am a competent caravanner who tows at a steady pace and keep within the law.

My point being, the kerbweights and the 85% rule is a guide only, not law.

Hope all this helps

Andrew

Hi Jaqueline

we tow our swift challenger 500 with a picasso 2.0 hdi manual.

MTPLM of the van is 1300kg and the car doesnt struggle.

I would imagine that a manual would get much more mpg than an automatic.

Our 2.0 Hdi averages at around 48mpg which is brilliant.

Hope this helps

Hi there

I tow with Citroan xsara picasso 2005 1.6 petrol manual box. Caravan is 2007 Bailey Ranger ser 5 460/4.

Tows very well have towed to York from south coast and have toured the west country for three weeks. No poblems with hill starts. Mind you I am not one of these people that speed along at 80 to 90mph. My speed is 55 to 60mph i feel thats the speed for me on motorways. The only problem i have had was fitting towing mirrors. Also have fitted Al-KO 1300 stabiliser which does help when these big lorry go by.

We do travel very light and watch and weigh every thing placed into the van. Also drain down toilet and hot water system.

The caravan mtplm is 1184kg miro is 972kg.

Car unladen weight 1240kg.

Max laden weight 1800kg

max towing weight braked as to Citroan had book 1300kg.

max tow hitch download 80kg.

Hope this is of some help

kind regards best wishes steve
