Never thought I`d see the day when snow was being taken away in trucks trying to get schools etc open on Monday!
 
aye, it never happened when i was at school, our wee yin was off 2 days due to the roads being dangerous.

i canny remember ever having the day off through snow.
 
i go to london every day at about 5am yes snow but now problem i sit in my crane and watch all the divs slip and slide /the place is a stand still if you let it be safe .
 
exactly dean, the health and safety has really gone overboard, in conjunction with all the other ramblings going on nowadays.

i totally agree with public safety being paramount, but come on, there has to be parameters. arsen wenger even said so today after their game was called off, the pitch was playable but it was deemed that the surrounding areas were not, where were these folks when i used to travel to ibrox throughout the winter and trudged through snow and ice to get there ?.

i can see his point.
 
driving 30 miles climb ing 40 mtrs to go around in circules is no probs,but drive down the the road like a school teacher is ano go
 
Some people round here are in the countryside of Scotland you must see.Neighbours have been helping eachother dig their cars out and onto roads that havent seen the light.Great community spirit but it is hard work, a lot of snow and ice. However, I do think that more could have been done r.e schools. Nurses went to their closest base (mental health, community etc) as did firemean. We are fortunate to live close to a school and could have carried on clearing pavements etc. I feel for the kids actually who need school and nursery and bloomin love snow!!!Mine would trudge through it!!

Mind you, while I`m on the go...another point is, there are folk who could actually walk to their `base` and `getting the car out` is maybe a status thing?? Thats annoying. My mum walked 4 miles the other day in bad weather conditions (and she is semi-retired) to look after elderly people in a nursing home.
 
caroline, where i live the gritters dont service our roads. my car was embedded outside the driveway after the first heavy fall back on monday 21st dec. however, i work with the national autistic society in a school setting which provides 24/7 52 weeks a year, therefore i had no option of phoning in to say i couldnt make it, there are too many people relying on me being there.

i phoned my brother in law who has a 4x4 (hope this doesnt start another debate ) and he took me over to work where i then had access to the companies 4x4 to go and pick up the folks from local areas to get them in to work.

i know it can be very stressful and at times impossible to overcome these harsh conditions, but as i said, my line of work has that wee bit extra commitment needed by all staff.

may i add, we got through it all and staffing levels were adequate, it can be done.

canny agree wi that, my line of work we are all salaried and our wages go on even through sickness, wouldny like to think that was a slate against me saying i managed to get to my work.

if i didnt go then i would have been paid just the same, but i have commitments to my job that some of you others dont have.
 
aye ok dean, know what yer saying.

but if you read what i said you would see that i get paid whether i go or not, but i still chose to make an effort to get there, its called dedication. same as the other posts regarding health workers etc, there aint no choice there.
 
not avin ago at you higlander but its the rest my saucspen lids teacher lives 10 miles away carnt get in but i can get in 30 miles away at 5am no probs
 
Some people are bitter by the way they are treated by employers. You, Highlander, are getting rewarded by the individuals that you work with so thats why it hasnt happened.You have dediction in you which adds to this in tonnes.
