CC site at Beechwood Grange is within cycling distance, also if you wish you can leave your cycles at the Park & Ride at Monks Cross approx 5/10 minutes away. This is a large with site with approx 85% large hardstanding pitches. We stayed there for 10nights at the beginning of the month and although full most nights it never felt too crowded. Another smaller site which is nearer and within walking distance is Manor Farm (google york caravan sites for more information). This is an adults only site now but we stayed there about 5/6 years ago when it was a CL, but they have now expanded.
Hope this may be of help

Couple of CL's at Warthill Grange and Meadown Farm, both Stockton on the Forest. We cycle from both into the centre of York - takes about half hour but I'm not that fit.

having been a york resident i would second the rowntree park suggestion. Its about as close as you can get without actually being in the city centre. You are metres from the city walls and literally on the edge of the city. Its mad how they can get a site this close to a busy city!!

Rowntree park is also a lovely park to walk round also, nice lake etc. Your also metres from the banks of the river ouse (so dont go when flooding is expected as that area goes about 6 ft under water!)

Further out past Terrys Chocolate factory is a site called Manor Farm. Have never stayed there but have popped in for a look and it appears OK. Check out their website or phone 01904 653163.

Beleive it is a 30 min walk into York.

Good luck
