Water Pressure Dilemma

We have a Whale watermaster 921 submersible pump on our van, (brand new, been used for the 1st time this week) 2 sinks and 1 shower to feed. There is a crystal filter under the sink unit, (don't know how long it's been on there).

The water pressure is dubious to say the least. Should I change the filter under the sink to boost pressure, or can you buy a pump that will boost the water pressure? We have tried to alter the switch under the front bunk but that makes no difference either.

I have been on the Whale website but can't fathom out what I need to do to make things better!

Your advice greatly appreciated.

Lolly,

Is the water pressure at the washroom sink the same as the pressure at the kitchen sink? If it is it is not the filter as the washroom water is not filtered.

Are you running on mains electric with the charger switched on? If not and you are just useing the caravan battery as the battery runs down the water pressure will eventually drop.

Check to see if there are any kinks or bends in the pipeing from the inlet to the sink.

You could try another pump just in case yours is faulty. It is always wise to carry a spare pump anyway.

As your caravan is new how was the water pressure when the dealer went through the caravan with you at the handover?

The switch under the front bunk I assume will be a pressure switch to control the runnning and cut off of the taps. This does not affect the actual water pressure.

The Whale 921 pump should provide good presssure.

If all else fails, as the caravan is new I would return it to the dealer.

Hi Lolly,

Have you checked the fine mesh filters in the kitchen and bathroom taps. They are located in the tap itself, (they simply unscrew from the end of the tap), They could be partially blocked, and if so, this could be another reason for low pressure.

Also as Hamer has said, check to make sure the water lines are not kinked or trapped anywhere.

Hi Hamer

Sorry, the pump is brand new, not the van! perhaps I did not explain properly.

To answer your questions, the water pressure is ok in the bathroom tap, yes we run on mains, have to get a new battery as ours is dead, and this is the 2nd pump we have tried.

Would you summise that it's the filter then?

Cheers

Hi Dave

Going to get hubby to check pipework today, don't think we have mesh filters?

Lolly,

As your water pressure is ok at the bathroom end there must be some restriction either at or before the kitchen tap. As you don't know how long the filter has been in the caravan I would change it for a new one because if it is past it's usefull life not only will it restrict water pressure but it could also harbour bacteria. If this does not cure your problem then check the fine filter at the end of the tap spout.

I had one of these under the sink filters on a Bailey Senator and as I use the caravan about 16 weeks a year I got fed up with replacing it. I removed the filter and replaced it with a length of drinking water pipe. I now use a jug filter from Boots.

Also these under sink filters are not cheap.

Pump sounds ok and filter probably filters all the water not some of it, so most likely cause is either leaks or kinks in lines going to taps which have low pressure. if it's leaks, there will probably be quite a lot of water inside the van somewhere. If there is not, look for kinks in the hoses ( usually, of course, in the most inaccessible places ) and remove the kink, either by just releasing hose clips, re-aligning and refastening clips, or by getting some more pipe and re reunning the lines without any kinks. vIf You have a tight right angle bend, then you can replace this with a fitting, although of course you then have two more places of potential leaks.

you can soften the pipe slightly ( and carefully) when empty using a hot air gun and form it into gentle bends rather than tight angles. The Whale 900 series pump should be more than adequate for the job.

Hi, Lolly. It looks like you have been given good advice already. All you need to do is narrow it all down a bit. How does the system perform on the internal tank using the internal pump? If water pressure is still quite bad, you are then looking for something common with the two systems, blocked/bent pipes and filters etc. If the pressure is better on the internal tank, then your looking at your external pump and perhaps the pressure valve, which may need a clean. One thing I will say is that on my Wyoming, the pressure was adequate, no more. So if you can find nothing wrong, perhaps an uprated pump will do the trick as a last resort. And yes, get that filter under the sink changed first.
