Oh dear am i that old,my first was a 1938 Buick convertable it had a "dickie seat in the back,it was so high that when the bigends went you did not have to slide underneath you nearly crawled, oh what times this was 1953, but back in 1951 had a Singer sports but cannot remember to much as a lot was happening about then.

past my test first time at 20 and got a 1100 special editin mini,(forien import)in black a real eye turner. wish I still had it , I've never seen another.

my first car was a 1966 ford angia 1200 super.it was light green with a white roof and bonnet.the back seat always fell down everytime i braked untill i fixed it with a bit of wire,i run out of petrol loads of times and had to do the walk to the petrol station with the can i left in the back because the petrol gauge didnt work,how many of you did that lol.i only paid

I had a 1965 (C reg) Ford Cortina Mk 1 1200cc. I took my first test in it in 1973 wnen I was 17 years young. The car's rear brakes were dodgy and when attempting the emmergency stop, the car almost spun accross the road. Needless to say.....I failed that test. The waiting time for a test was about 6 months then, so I took another test in an Austin 1100 car belonging to the driving school that I had taken 6 lessons from, prior to the second test whish I passed.

The Cortina was then used as my little Roller until the MOT failule made it to expensive for me to repair because the front flitch plates were weakened which meant that the front of the car may collapse and the Macpherson Struts would pop out of the bonnett.

A bit of scrounging lifts from mates while I saved a bit resulted in a little Vauxhall Viva HA. This kept me mobile for 4 years until it "bit the dust" Ah....the good old days.

I wish I had one right now. But back then insurance and the fact that as a motor mechanic apprentice, I only picked up 6.94p a week put such dreams out of reach.

My dream ambition was to own a Trimuph TR6.

First car in 1971 - a Dove Grey (English White roof) series one Mini Cooper - the real Cooper with the factory nitrided crankshaft.

And it was just as well that you could reach most things from the bonnet, it needed tuning most weekends - either the carbs or the points - or the adjusting the rear brakes with the special Paddy Hopkirk spanner.

Looking back at it, it was great fun - especially when the ride height was adjusted downwards - but it wasn't that fast and it didn't stop that well either - compared to recent cars anyway.
