Hello John,

Technically the Zig X7 is power supply, not just a charger.

To retain compliance with the caravan construction regulations, the maximum output voltage to the appliances in the caravan should not exceed 13.8V dc.

I am not sure how the Sterling or Cetek multistage PSU's meet that regulation.

There are several alternatives to the ZIG, but you will be looking for a psu which is regulated to 13.8v and that has at least 8A continuous rating.

The Sterling and Cetek units are used in marine applications and there isn't any much stricter than this.

I have to ask, do you know the specs. of the Sterling and Cetek units?

Hello Rod,

No I don't know the specs which is why I don't know how (or if) the units meet the caravan regulations.

If they are designed for marine usage then they are probably very good, Though about 15 years ago I did come across a marine unit (Can't remember the make now Racal or Decca I think) which despite being checked by the manufacturer consitently managed to cook 500Ah of marine batteries much to my Uncles annoyance and expense.

Sadly as soon as the word 'marine' is attached to almost any product its price multiplies and make it rather expensive for normal caravan usage.

though I did come across an old Decca marine powre ununit which managed to cook 5 x 100Ah marine

I believe that you will find that chargers/PSUs have progressed a long way since then with switched mode units.

My own Sterling is a 20 amp, 4 stage unit that safely controls the charge rate of up to 3 individual batteries.

I find that it is always a good idea to research before expounding and misleading others.

I had many a Zig pack up on me.

Reliability aside, the problem with this and many other chargers is that the output voltage is limited to 13.8 to prevent gassing but at the same time shorten battery life by never fully charging them.

Let's just say that many PSU/charger manufacturers are stuck with their designs and not spending on R&D to find alternatives to prevent gassing whilst still fully charging the battery.

Until recently, caravan manufacturers could be labelled in a similar fashion but I see now that the more forward thinking ones are fitting switched mode units such a Cetek.

As an aside, switched mode PSU/chargers can be bought for less than half the price charged for Zig.

John@wolves,

If your friend decides to go the Sterling route check out the prices here.

This is where I buy mine.

I am currently using the International 20 amp, 4 stage as I have two batteries one Gel and a lead acid.

The Pro-Budget 6 Amp or 10 amp should be a good replacement for the Zig.
