zig versus battery charger

just pondering whether or not to fit a zig to my caravan or a battery charger,we only need the battery for lights and water pump...any thoughts anyone?

Hello Ernie,

The danger of using a simple battery charger (i.e. not a smart charger) is you can easily over charge the battery if you use a pitch with an electric hook up option.

Over charging can cause the battery to:-

give off excursive hydrogen gas,

Over heat

boil off its electrolytes

and permanently damage it so it will not hold as much charge as it should.

Zig and other similar units designed for caravans, prevent the over charging, and the limit the nominal 12V circuits to a maximum of only 13.8V

You can get smart battery chargers (Ctek, Aldi and Lidl sometimes sell such units) These monitor the battery condition and will only charge when necessary. These may meet you needs.
