    Spanish windlass

Steve, your description was good enough for me to understand, The method is now filed away in my memory box, perhaps I'll have chance to use it one day.

    Breakaway.

this is how the Dutch bracket is connected http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d44/656sqdn/caravan/ so nothing special there!

    Breakaway.

Rob, ref the Dutch type cable attachment bracket. I've tried using this type for bracket for many years but so far have never managed to connect the cable in such a way that I feel confident that it will stay put. Whatever I do the cable easily loosens so it could jump off the hook at any...

How to avoid the Waste Water Run ?!

John, sarcastic yes, and I shouldn't be, sorry. Connection to an environmentally clean drainage system is far better than allowing waste water to be dumped on the ground.

How to avoid the Waste Water Run ?!

Best way to avoid the water run is to stay home. I wonder why anyone would go to al the trouble of towing a caravan x hundred miles and then complain about carrying a bucket of water a few yards each day.

    STABILISERS

Lutz, Lutz, Not really familiar with the Active Electronic Systems and wonder how long it will be before such things are commonplace. I've yet to see a report or advert for one and suspect they will bear a heavy price tag. And will they be retrospectively available or only supplied with a new...

    STABILISERS

David, quote 'towing to twin axel caravans with a vehicle match of no more that 50%'unquote. Must be towing with a HGV, with that combination I would think the stabilizer doesn't get to do much work.

    STABILISERS

Perhaps George is taking a negative view, nevertheless a correct one in my opinion. Stabilizers delay the onset of sway by increasing the critical speed of the combination. People will naturally take advantage of this and therefore risk being involved in an accident simply because braking...

    cleaning toilet cassette

After each holiday I fill the holding tank 7/8 full with water, throw in a bit of bleach, leave 24 hrs then give a good rinse. May not please the advocates of expensive cleaning fluids but has worked ok for me for the past twenty years.

    Elldis/Compass 540 Towing instability

with your background probably no need to mention- bring the nose weight up to 75kg (piece of paving slab in the front locker)

    Elldis/Compass 540 Towing instability

In addition to Rob's advice I suggest:- increasing the rear tyre pressures by 5 or even 10 psi above the Kia recommendation, don't exceed the max pressure imprinted on the tyre wall check the caravan is slightly nose down when hanging on the tow ball, nose up has a negative effect on stability...

    dogs - "certain breeds accepted"

I take your point Sarah, I have known some very friendly German Shepherds, in fact I've never met a bad one, happily. But certain dogs, especially pitbull types, have such a bad reputation I can understand campsite owners banning them.

    dogs - "certain breeds accepted"

Dog owners should realize and accept that they are not welcome everywhere. I'm not particularly found of dogs and am quite happy to have camp sites that restrict or forbid them. In my opinion all camp sites should demand that dogs be kept on a leash at all times, regardless of how expensive the...

    Noseweight when parked on slope

Checking a 75kg nose weight by lifting is also an excellent method to determine the condition of the spinal joints. Could be a bit of a bummer thou if the test is negative and the intention was to start a holiday!
