going to croatia via austria (opinions needed please)

No info on sites but bear in mind Croatia is not in the EU so worth checking your insurance and green card are valid.

    vingettes

The swiss ones can involve long queues at the frontier so best to buy in advance where possible. As already stated you will need 2 but they are often available on Ebay from both UK and European sellers. All swiss vignettes are valid to the 31st Jan of the following year eg the current red ones...

Aires / overnight stops in France

For personal security be very careful staying overnight in remote Aires, particularly in the southern part of France. They look nice but can and have been subject to robberies and petty theft. In extreme cases sleeping gas is pumped into Caravans to keep people sleeping while they are robbed...

    stoppping at dunkirk

Personally I wouldnt. There is a very nice campsite nearby in a place Gravelines called Camping Des Dunes. Less chance of being robbed or having asylum seekers sneeking on board your van there !!! Visit www.viamichelin.co.uk for directions.

    Fuel in france.

I drive to Italy every year with my family as well as several shopping trips or battlefield vists with a friend - mostly to France and Belguim. Never had a problem as such but never chanced running low and relying on an outlying out of hours filling station. I normally fill up during the day...

Help needed 1st time touring in france

Make sure you take and mains socket tester to ensure the hook up on the French site is not reverse polarity. If it is swap the brown and blue wires around in your hook up lead. Or buy an adaptor before you leave and rewire it ready for use - but clearly mark it.

    french motorways,

Thanks for update re petrol prices in France as am driving back to Italy with a tent and a roof box this summer. I was only able to recount last summer when I was paying 1.41 euro per litre on the Autoroute near Bethune and only 1.20 euro per litre at Carrefour off the Autoroute - all for...

    Route to Lake Como

Jim, I drove past Como last year on my way to Tuscany. This was my first occasion without my Caravan as I have moved on to Tent with a roof box ! Route was Calais, Dunkirk, Lille, Mons, Namur, Luxembourg, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Gotthard and then Como. This avoids paying French road tolls as...

    Lake Garda Directions

The cheapest way is to drive to Garda is Calais, Lille, Mons, Namur, Luxembourg, Stuttgart, Munich, Innsbruck through Brenner pass towards Verona. You avoid Swiss road tax of GBP40 if towing a van and French motorway tolls. Also - Luxembourg has cheapest fuel prices in Europe.

    Lake Garda

We towed our Caravan to Italy each year 2002-2004 and now go with a tent in a roof box. With a 4pm crossing plus the time difference would recommend stay first night close to the Channel. We stayed in campsite in Gravelines. Then head Dunkirk, Lille, Mons, Namur, Luxembourg to the Rhine valley...

    french motorways,

I believe they waived the supplement for trailers in 2002 but as far as I know there are no reductions. Many of the N roads in central France are as good as Toll roads. Also check www.viamichelin.co.uk as not all Autoroutes are toll roads. Bear in mind autoroutes are generally safer and provide...
