13 pin plugs

Hii will be getting a new van with a 13 pin plug i am also having new car but at the time i orderd it we did not think of getting new van so thay are putting the twin sockets black and gray but i also have a tralier with just the 7 pin plug so before i phone dealer is best to leave the twin sockets on and get one of those converter lead thingys from towsure or is ther anotherway round it as do use my trailer a lot

I would have the 13 pin system without any doubt.

It is easy to change the trailer to a 13 pin plug and saves having adaptors trailing around.

The wiring for the trailer to 13 pin is exactly the same as the 12N, just use pins 1 to 7.

The 12S uses pins 8 to 13 with 12 being unused.
 
Agree with Damian the 13 pin connection is far superior. The trouble with the converter units is that the suffer from all the snags of the 12N and 12S, are vunerable to rain and theft when on the caravan and will cost more than a 13 pin plug for your trailer.
 
And if you need to tow another trailer ? you can get one of these 13pin to 7pin plugin adaptor , it plugs directly into the 13pin socket & gives you a normal 12n on the rear....
 
Yep - go with 13pin plug and get the plug in adaptor as indicated by Sproket. While your ordering I would get a spare to keep in the car in case you have to tow some other unplanned trailer at some point as I tend to leave mine plugged into the trailer 7 pin and keep on in the car. If your not not in any rush for the adaptor they are only .99p on ebay from Hong Kong.
 
There is possibly one small justification for sticking with the adaptor cables.

If you happen to run over the plug with the jockey wheel, yes, I did it, then it is easier to fit a new adaptor cable rather than try to fit a new 13 pin plug, especially if you are on a site somewhere.

I agree with the comments raised in favour, but as an owner of adaptor cables (in 2 vans have gone both ways so maybe I am AC/DC?) I can state that if you look after them as you would any plug and socket, then you will rarely have a problem.
 
My 13-pin system came with the 7-pin adaptor for a trailer, as part of the fitting by the Manufacturer, who was Mitsubishi.
