My Terrano is a bit of a crate, I knew that when I bougth it and only intended to have it for a year or so (I bought my caravan and needed something to tow it with). Anyway there is a 1999 Land Rover Discovery4 2.5 TDC automatic up for grabs in a local dealer that looks to be in really good material state (sorry don't know what mileage yet as I haven't been there when they have been open). are there anythings that I should be looking at in particular for this make and model?
any hints or experience greatly appreciated.

Its surely not goint to be a Disco 4 at that age. As far as I know, 4 is the latest generation. What I do know is that the TD2/3 engines had numerous cylinder head problems, so it might be something to consider.

The model from 1998 onwards was a huge improvement on what came before, but it did little to redress the reliability issues. 135 bhp is just adequate for a vehicle of that size and weight, fully loaded with a caravan though i would expect to be very thirsty.

It may turn out to be a very good buy, but it could also be a wrong un. When you see it check for easy starting. If its poor to start, it could be the injectors, but could also be the in tank fuel pump, so fuel pressure would need to be checked. A replacement pump fitted is around the £6-700 mark. If it has air suspension, and I guess it will, check for perished rubbers. Look also for a slight diesel leak on the drivers side, this is a common one and is the fuel pressure regulator, about £300 fitted.

You may get more for your money looking at a slightly later model from the Japanese manufacturers.
